Job summary

Okanagan Indian Band is seeking an Elementary Teacher to foster children’s aesthetic, emotional, social and cultural development in BC classrooms. You will partner with families to provide a meaningful educational program.

The role requires collaboration on IEPs/IBPs, curriculum delivery according to BC standards, and active participation in cultural and language programming. A strong commitment to First Nations education is valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent required.
  • Valid BC teaching certificate issued by the Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Current First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid BC driver's license, class 5 and reliable vehicle.
  • Experience teaching elementary grades; ability to split classes.
  • Experience with First Nations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with teachers on Smart Goals, IEPs and safety plans.
  • Deliver BC Curricular Content and Competencies in classrooms.
  • Prepare yearly overviews and progress reports for Vice Principal.
  • Manage time between grade-specific and multi-grade instruction.
  • Team teach and support Language and Culture programming as needed.
  • Develop and implement IEPs/IBPs and track progress.

Job Summary

The Teacher will provide a variety of experiences that foster the child's aesthetic and artistic development, emotional, social, and cultural development, intellectual and physical development. It is important to value the contributions and needs of the parents and to work in partnership with them to provide a meaningful educational program.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

Reports to the Vice Principal.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers on Smart Goals, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Intervention Plans (IBPs), Safety Plans, attendance, report cards, and interim reports
  • Curriculum development and delivery following BC Curricular Content and Competencies as set out by the Ministry of Education for BC
  • Complete and adhere to yearly overviews submitted to school Vice Principal
  • Manage time between grade specific instruction and class combined instruction
  • Assist and team teach in other classes as well as with Language and Culture programming, as needed
  • Identify ways to help and support student learning through intervention strategies
  • Prepare and implement Individual Education Plans (IEP's) and Individual Behaviour Plans (IBP's), maintain records and progress reports
  • Continually assess student progress and make recommendations for program changes, ensuring IEP goals are met
  • Ensure students work and corrections are complete and assist students in meeting deadlines; follow up on work missed due to absences
  • Classroom supervision and management and supervise field trips and other supervision duties as required
  • Develop and deliver unit plans inclusive of syilx/sqilxw knowledge and land-based learning when applicable and appropriate
  • Implement a student-centered learning program which enhances the explicit programs our school delivers
  • Implement positive discipline when required, conflict management of student incidents
  • All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties
  • Perform other duties as required
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
  • Complete student report cards and interim reports using school-wide format
  • Complete formalized and standardized testing, including progress monitoring when applicable
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers to develop Smart Goals, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs), and Safety Plans for students, and adhere to them
  • Attend regular staff meetings and team-based meetings
  • Must attend nsyilxcen language classes for school staff with a willingness to learn
  • Attend all school-based Professional Development Days as directed
  • Ensure attendance is taken daily and document daily notes
  • Keep informed of current trends in the treatment of children with special needs
  • Follow all guidelines as outlined in the Cultural Immersion School Handbooks
  • Complete other required reports such as First Aid reports and Incident Reports, etc.
  • Communicate regularly with parents to discuss student behaviours and progress in a timely manner, both challenges and growth
  • Be ready, willing, and able to physically attend work during school closures (regular school day)
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures

Education
  • Bachelor of Education, or equivalent

Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to teach at an elementary level
  • Ability to teach split classes and team teach all classes within the school (grades K4-G7)
  • Experience working with First Nations preferred

CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE

$65,000.00 - $85, 000.00 per annum dependant upon education and experience.

Preference will be given to qualified Aboriginal Applicants as per section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
