Job description

Reporting to the Chef, Prep Cooks are responsible for day-to-day food preparation and service. This role involves operating a station before and during service to ensure quality standards are met. As a prep cook, you will assist with daily specials, seasonal menus, food preparation, and scheduled service periods. The role requires working in a fast-paced, stressful environment, requiring quick thinking and strong problem-solving skills.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Chef, perform routine kitchen tasks such as dishes, cleaning, and organizing.
  • Label and stock all ingredients on shelves and in fridges for organization and accessibility.
  • Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping vegetables, and cutting meat.
  • Operate culinary equipment safely, understanding that such tools can be dangerous and require proper care and PPE.
  • Maintain and store food and kitchen products according to health and safety standards.
  • Ensure freshness and quality of all menu items.
  • Keep workstations sanitized, stocked, clean, and organized.
  • Work as required during weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential kitchen functions satisfactorily.
  • Willingness to obtain or already hold a Safe Food Handling certificate.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow procedures.

Working Conditions

  • The job involves physically demanding tasks such as standing for long hours, repetitive motions, chopping, and cooking, with exposure to hot and cold environments and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • The environment may include smoke, heat, airborne particles, and loud noises typical of a busy kitchen. Work requires concentration, attention to detail, and high accuracy.
