Job summary

Alstom in Ottawa, ON is seeking a full-time Power Technician to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair 1500V+ traction power systems, including substations, UPS, cables, OCS, and tunnel lighting. You’ll work rotating shifts in a 24/7 rail operation, ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

The role emphasizes EHSS adherence, accurate records, and collaboration with contractors and internal teams. Ontario G license required; various assets may be beneficial.

Qualifications

  • Educational background in electrical trades or related discipline.
  • Experience in electrical maintenance and troubleshooting in industrial/transport/utilities environments.
  • Experience with underground and/or overhead high-voltage systems preferred.
  • Lineman experience is an asset.
  • Commitment to Environmental, Health and Safety practices.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for complex electrical systems.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Strong computer skills and CMMS experience.
  • Ontario Class G driver's licence mandatory.
  • Additional licences or certifications related to trucks, trailers, aerial devices, or similar equipment are assets.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts for a seven-day rail operation.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical equipment for safe, reliable PS&D systems.
  • Perform inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance, and complex troubleshooting on 1500V+ traction power systems.
  • Monitor power systems, substations, and traction equipment to ensure reliability.
  • Diagnose electrical faults and minimize service disruptions.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and work orders in the system.
  • Support field modifications, upgrades, and improvement initiatives.
  • Implement maintenance techniques to improve safety and efficiency.
  • Supervise power isolation and lockout/tagout with teams and contractors.
  • Participate in safety meetings, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, suppliers, and management to achieve objectives.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable legislation and standards.

Your Future Role

As a Power Technician, you will provide technical expertise in troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment to ensure the safety, availability, and reliability of the Power Supply & Distribution (PS&D) System. This includes power substation equipment, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, cabling, overhead contact systems (OCS), and tunnel lighting.

Supporting a 24/7 rail operation, you will work rotating shifts on a continuous seven-day cycle, performing technical maintenance activities while ensuring compliance with Alstom's health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.

You will be responsible for:

  • Complying with and promoting Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Performing inspections, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and complex troubleshooting on traction power systems operating at 1500V and above.
  • Monitoring power systems, circuit breakers, substations, and associated traction power equipment to ensure system reliability.
  • Diagnosing and resolving electrical faults efficiently and safely to minimize service disruptions.
  • Completing maintenance records, inspections, and work orders accurately and on time within the Maintenance Management System.
  • Supporting and implementing field modifications, upgrades, and improvement initiatives.
  • Recommending and applying maintenance techniques and procedures that improve safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Supervising power isolation and lockout/tagout processes for rail system teams and designated third-party contractors.
  • Actively participating in safety meetings, emergency preparedness activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborating effectively with internal teams, suppliers, contractors, and management to achieve operational objectives.
  • Maintaining compliance with all applicable legislation, procedures, and technical standards.
  • Other relevant responsibilities as assigned by manager.

Compensation

The expected compensation for this role is $35.17 CAD per hour, plus applicable benefits.
