Job summary

Alstom in Ottawa, ON is seeking a full-time Power Technician to troubleshoot, maintain and repair traction power equipment, UPS, cabling and tunnel lighting for a 24/7 rail operation. You will work rotating shifts to ensure safety and reliability.

Responsibilities include inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance, documentation in the CMMS, and collaboration with teams and contractors to meet operational goals. Ontario Class G license is required; HV system experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Electrical maintenance and troubleshooting experience in industrial/transit environments.
  • Experience reading electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for complex electrical systems.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's license is mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance, and complex troubleshooting on traction power systems.
  • Monitor power systems, circuit breakers and substations to ensure reliability.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical faults quickly to minimize service disruptions.
  • Maintain records and work orders in the maintenance system.
  • Support field modifications, upgrades and safety initiatives.
  • Supervise power isolation and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, suppliers and contractors to meet objectives.
  • Adhere to EHSS policies and applicable laws and standards.

Your Future Role

As a Power Technician, you will provide technical expertise in troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment to ensure the safety, availability, and reliability of the Power Supply & Distribution (PS&D) System. This includes power substation equipment, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, cabling, overhead contact systems (OCS), and tunnel lighting.

Supporting a 24/7 rail operation, you will work rotating shifts on a continuous seven-day cycle, performing technical maintenance activities while ensuring compliance with Alstom's health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.

You will be responsible for:

  • Complying with and promoting Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Performing inspections, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and complex troubleshooting on traction power systems operating at 1500V and above.
  • Monitoring power systems, circuit breakers, substations, and associated traction power equipment to ensure system reliability.
  • Diagnosing and resolving electrical faults efficiently and safely to minimize service disruptions.
  • Completing maintenance records, inspections, and work orders accurately and on time within the Maintenance Management System.
  • Supporting and implementing field modifications, upgrades, and improvement initiatives.
  • Recommending and applying maintenance techniques and procedures that improve safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Supervising power isolation and lockout/tagout processes for rail system teams and designated third-party contractors.
  • Actively participating in safety meetings, emergency preparedness activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborating effectively with internal teams, suppliers, contractors, and management to achieve operational objectives.
  • Maintaining compliance with all applicable legislation, procedures, and technical standards.
  • Other relevant responsibilities as assigned by manager.

  • Educational background or formal training as an Electrician, Electrical Engineering Technologist, Electrical Technician, or a related electrical discipline.
  • Relevant electrical maintenance and troubleshooting experience in industrial, transportation, utilities, power distribution, or similar environments.
  • Experience working with underground and/or overhead high-voltage systems is strongly preferred.
  • Lineman experience is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) practices and safe work procedures.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical systems.
  • Experience reading and interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Strong computer skills and experience using maintenance management systems.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence is mandatory.
  • Additional licences or certifications related to trucks, trailers, aerial devices, or similar equipment are considered assets.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts in support of a seven-day rail operation.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
Compensation

The expected compensation for this role is $35.17 CAD per hour, plus applicable benefits.
