Job summary

FortisAlberta is seeking a Journeyman Power Line Technician for the Redcliff area to build, maintain and restore the electrical distribution system that powers Alberta communities.

You will perform live line work, switching, system protection tasks, and outage restoration with a strong emphasis on safety while mentoring apprentices and collaborating with the Field Operations team. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Redcliff, with occasional travel and standby requirements.

Qualifications

• Journeyman Power Line Technician with strong safety practices.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Basic computer skills including Office/Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Construct, maintain, repair and troubleshoot overhead and underground electrical distribution.
• Perform live line work and support safe operation of the network.
• Develop switching plans and perform system/substation switching.
• Complete hazard assessments and maintain safe worksites.
• Coordinate outages, contractor prep and project readiness.
• Respond to customer trouble calls and outages with timely service.
• Standby rotations and emergency response as required.

Job Description:

• Construct, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
• Perform live line work and support the safe operation of the electrical distribution network.
• Develop switching plans and perform system, radial, and substation switching activities.
• Complete hazard assessments, maintain safe worksites, and support incident investigations.
• Perform distribution operations, maintenance, patrols, repairs, and outage restoration activities.
• Coordinate construction readiness activities, including planned outages, contractor coordination, and project preparation requirements.
• Respond to customer trouble calls and power interruptions with professional and timely service.
• Participate in standby rotations and emergency response activities as required.
• Support specialized operational functions such as cable fault locating, testing, system switching, and advanced construction activities.
• Mentor apprentices and contribute to the development and success of the team.

Qualifications:

• Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence with air brake endorsement.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety and safe work practices.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced field environment.
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
• Additional trade certifications, certificates, diplomas, or degrees in a related discipline are considered an asset.

Important:

• Permanent, full-time role.
• Monday – Friday schedule, with participation in after-hours and weekend standby rotations.
• Based out of our Redcliff service location.
• Successful candidate must reside within 50 kilometers of the assigned service point office, or within a 40‑minute response time.
• This is a unionized role and the successful applicant will be required to become a union member on hire if they are not one already.
• Occasional overnight travel may be required.
• Current driver's abstract and criminal background check required.
• Safety-sensitive position requiring pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
