Job summary

ATCO Electric in Peace River, AB seeks a Journeyperson Powerline Technician to build and maintain transmission and distribution lines. You will emphasize safety and preventive maintenance while mentoring apprentices.

The role offers on-call standby duties and collaboration with teams to ensure reliable service. A valid Journeyperson certificate and a valid driver’s license are required; residence near Peace River is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate is required.
  • Interprovincial Red Seal eligibility is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, operate, inspect and maintain overhead power lines, substations and related equipment.
  • Install and maintain street lighting systems, following quality and safety standards.
  • Execute system switching per Electrical Operations Standards.
  • Supervise contracted labor to ensure compliance and quality.
  • Manage maintenance programs and inspections, keeping thorough documentation.
  • Collaborate with electrical technicians on installation and maintenance.
  • Diagnose faults and troubleshoot systems, delivering immediate and long-term solutions.
  • Respond to emergencies and standby duties efficiently.
  • Coordinate outages and execute switching orders precisely.
  • Respond to customer service requests promptly and professionally.
  • Participate in company-sponsored community relations activities.
  • Maintain and operate company vehicles and equipment.
  • Uphold strict safety and environmental regulations.
  • Lead, coach and mentor apprentices and colleagues.
  • Engage in continuous personal and professional development.

About The Role

As a Line Powerline Technician at ATCO Electric, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining and constructing electrical transmission and distribution lines. Your work ensures reliable electricity supply to communities and businesses. Safety protocols and preventive maintenance are key aspects of this role. Additionally, as a journeyperson, you’ll assist in developing PLT Apprentices and other new employees.

While we are seeking a qualified Journeyperson, we may consider applications from registered apprentices should a suitable journeyperson not be found.

What You’ll Do:
  • Construct, operate, inspect and maintain overhead power lines, substation, and related apparatus.

  • Collaborate with electrical technician for equipment installation and maintenance.

  • Handle emergency response and standby duties efficiently.
  • Coordinate outages and execute switching orders with precision.
  • Responds to customer service requests promptly and professionally.

  • Uphold stringent safety and environmental regulations.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor apprentices and colleagues as required.

What We’re Looking For:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate.
  • Valid or eligibility for Interprovincial Red Seal.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of live line techniques using bare hand, sticks, and 25kv rubber glove work achieved through live line training is preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 vehicle operator’s license,ability to obtain Class 1 or Class 3 Operator’s License.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
  • Previous on-call and troubleshooting experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills are an asset.

An expectation of the Powerline Technician - Line position is to provide after-hours stand-by duties. As such, you will be required to maintain a residence within the established service point boundary for Peace River, AB.
