Job summary

FortisAlberta is seeking a Journeyman Power Line Technician to build, maintain, and restore Alberta's electrical distribution system. This hands-on role involves live line work, switching, outages, and customer-facing service while ensuring safety and reliability.

You will operate in a team environment, mentor apprentices, and participate in standby rotations. Based in Redcliff area with occasional overnight travel; union membership may be required on hire.

Qualifications

• Alberta Class 3 driver licence with air brake endorsement is required.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and safe work practices.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced field environment.
• Basic computer skills, including MS Office and Outlook.
• Additional trade certifications are an asset.

Responsibilities

• Construct, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot overhead/underground distribution systems.
• Perform live line work and support safe operation of the network.
• Develop switching plans and perform system, radial, and substation switching.
• Complete hazard assessments and maintain safe worksites.
• Coordinate outages, contractor coordination and project prep.
• Respond to customer trouble calls and power interruptions promptly.
• Participate in standby rotations and emergency response as needed.
• Support cable fault locating, testing, system switching, and advanced construction tasks.
• Mentor apprentices and contribute to team success.

Job Description:

• Construct, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
• Perform live line work and support the safe operation of the electrical distribution network.
• Develop switching plans and perform system, radial, and substation switching activities.
• Complete hazard assessments, maintain safe worksites, and support incident investigations.
• Perform distribution operations, maintenance, patrols, repairs, and outage restoration activities.
• Coordinate construction readiness activities, including planned outages, contractor coordination, and project preparation requirements.
• Respond to customer trouble calls and power interruptions with professional and timely service.
• Participate in standby rotations and emergency response activities as required.
• Support specialized operational functions such as cable fault locating, testing, system switching, and advanced construction activities.
• Mentor apprentices and contribute to the development and success of the team.

Qualifications:

• Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence with air brake endorsement.

Important:

• Permanent, full-time role.
• Monday - Friday schedule, with participation in after-hours and weekend standby rotations.
• Based out of our Redcliff service location.
• Successful candidate must reside within 50 kilometers of the assigned service point office, or within a 40-minute response time.
• This is a unionized role and the successful applicant will be required to become a union member on hire if they are not one already.
• Occasional overnight travel may be required.
• Current driver's abstract and criminal background check required.
• Safety-sensitive position requiring pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
