Job summary

Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is seeking an Engineer, Event Analysis to analyze events affecting system reliability and support compliant operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. You will collect and analyze SCADA/PMU/EMS data, develop automated monitoring tools and dashboards, and communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering required.
  • P.Eng. designation with APEGA.
  • 5 years in electric power industry with ops planning, event/disturbance analysis, power-system modelling, protection and control, or engineering economics.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA/PMU/EMS and other operational data sources with experience in event/disturbance/root-cause analysis.
  • Strong data analytics and automation skills including the use of Python.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and ability to collaborate across functions.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Reliability Standards, ISO rules, and compliance evidence requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, integrate, validate, and analyze high-volume data to assess asset performance and compliance with ISO rules and Alberta Reliability Standards.
  • Translate compliance obligations into measurable data rules, thresholds, indicators, and test logic.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain automated tools and dashboards for monitoring, exception detection, alerting, and reporting.
  • Analyze events, determine root causes, assess risks, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Create and maintain traceable analysis records, source-data documentation, and audit trails for defensible assessments.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Compliance, IT, and facility owners to confirm findings and support timely resolution of gaps.
  • Track trends and communicate risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders; improve monitoring methods.
