Job summary

RWDI is seeking a Model Builder Co-op for a four-month term starting January 2027 at our Guelph office. You will support the Model Shop by constructing physical scale models used for environmental testing in our wind tunnels, playing a critical role in simulating real-world conditions.

This hands-on role emphasizes building intricate cityscapes, interpreting technical drawings, and collaborating with engineers to support environmental analysis.

Qualifications

• Hands-on building or crafting experience (model-making, woodworking, design).
• Ability to construct detailed scale models using various materials (acrylic, foam, etc.).
• 3D spatial thinking and detail orientation are essential.
• Good hand skills with small tools and adhesives; able to follow drawings precisely.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD; RHINO Sphere experience is a bonus.

Responsibilities

• Construct scale models at 1:300 to 1:400 for wind tunnel testing.
• Work with foam and other materials to create durable components.
• Interpret drawings and photographs to ensure precision and realism.
• Use hand tools and shop equipment to cut, shape, and assemble models.

As a Model Builder Co‑op, you will support RWDI’s Model Shop by constructing physical scale models used for environmental testing in our three Guelph wind tunnels. These models play a critical role in simulating and studying real-world conditions.

Key Responsibilities

In this hands‑on role, you will:

• Build intricate cityscapes at scales typically ranging from 1:300 to 1:400
• Work with foam and a wide range of other model‑making materials to create accurate, durable components.
• Interpret technical drawings, building references, and photographs to ensure precision and realism in each model.
• Use a variety of hand tools and shop equipment to cut, shape, and assemble model elements.
• Collaborate with a skilled team to produce models that directly support engineering and environmental analysis.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Background/Qualifications of a Candidate:

• Strong interest or experience in hands‑on building or crafting (e.g., model‑making, woodworking, mechanics, studio art/design, or other creative hobbies)
  • Ability to, or interest in, constructing detailed scale models using various building materials (e.g. acrylic, styrene, foam, etc.)
• A strong aptitude/proficiency for spatial awareness and the ability to think/conceptualize in 3D is required – this is essential for success in this role
• Good hand skills working with small hand and power tools, solvents, and glues.
• A detailed proficiency in computer applications, particularly with AutoCAD (experience with RHINO Sphere is a bonus, though not required)
• Ability to work/collaborate effectively within a team environment
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Proven capabilities to set job priorities, manage tasks, and meet firm deadlines
