Job summary

Annapolis Valley First Nation in Nova Scotia seeks a Post Majority Support Services Coordinator to help youth aging out of Mi'kmaw Child and Family Services. Working in the Community Services Department, the Coordinator will provide direct client support, coordinate programs, access funding, and advocate for youth transitioning to adulthood.

The role focuses on life-skills, financial literacy, and connection to community, culture, and supports.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and lived experience.

Responsibilities

Job description

Department: Community Services
Reports To: Executive Director
Position Type: Full-Time (30 hours/week)
Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required to support operational needs, programs, and events.
Salary: Starting at $55,000 per year

The Post Majority Support Services Coordinator is responsible for supporting youth and young adults who are aging out of the care of Mi'kmaw Child and Family Services. Working within the Community Services Department, the Coordinator will provide direct client support, coordinate programs and services, facilitate access to funding and resources, and advocates for the needs of youth transitioning to adulthood.

The Coordinator will help participants build independence through life skills development, financial literacy education, and connections to community, culture, and support networks. The role also contributes to the planning, coordination, and delivery of community-based programs, services, and events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized support to youth and young adults transitioning from care.
  • Assist clients in developing goals related to housing, education, employment, health, finances, and overall well-being.
  • Coordinate access to programs, services, supports, and funding opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential client records and documentation.
  • Advocate for clients while navigating community and external services.
  • Support life skills development, including budgeting, meal planning, housing maintenance, time management, and self-advocacy.
  • Deliver financial literacy education and coaching.
  • Encourage participation in Mi\'kmaw culture, traditions, community events, and support networks.
  • Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community organizations, educational institutions, employers, and service providers.
Program Coordination and Development
  • Support planning, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of programs and events.
  • Prepare reports, maintain statistics, and assist with program and funding reporting.
  • Monitor program expenditures and assist with budget tracking as required.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and organizational initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and lived experience.

Assets
  • Experience working with youth, families, or community-based programs.
  • Education or experience in social work, child and youth care, human services, community development, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of community resources, support systems, and youth transition services.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, group activities, or community events.
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
  • Lived experience within Mi\'kmaw communities and/or the child welfare system.
  • Understanding the unique experiences and challenges faced by youth transitioning from care.
  • Knowledge of Mi\'kmaw culture, traditions, values, and community supports, or a demonstrated willingness to learn and work respectfully within a First Nation community.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities or organizations.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily office and community-based work.
  • Regular travel within communities may be required.
  • Evening and weekend work may be necessary.
  • Occasional lifting, event setup, and participation in outdoor activities may be required.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check is required as a condition of employment.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR certification is considered an asset.
