About the job: POLICORNER is hiring a reporter for our new, Peel Region, subscription-based publication.

The ideal candidate will cover local and regional politics in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon, including next year's municipal elections. You should have experience in political reporting, strong sourcing abilities across these municipalities, and thrive in a start-up newsroom environment. A deep understanding of municipal government operations is essential. You must be well-sourced, passionate about breaking news, and eager to outperform the competition in reporting on the region's politics, policies, and personalities.

This is a remote position; however, the successful candidate must be based in the Greater Toronto Area and be able to have an on-the-ground presence in Peel Region when required.

About the publication: Our new Peel Region-focused publication, currently under development, is an extension of our well-established Queen's Park-based political newsletter. Trusted by Peel's top political figures, it will provide in-depth reporting on the politics, policies, and personalities in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. The newsletter will be published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7 a.m.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and produce the Peel Region newsletter.
  • Cover local and regional council meetings, committee meetings, mayors, councillors, city leadership, school boards, municipal elections, and more.
  • Conduct multi-media appearances as appropriate.

Experience:

  • A degree in journalism, political science, or a related field.
  • One year of newsroom experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience covering federal, provincial, or municipal politics is an asset.

Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of municipal and regional government and their relationship with the province.
  • Familiarity with key players and issues at Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon City/Town Halls.
  • Engaging, conversational writing style.
  • Proven record of breaking news and enterprise journalism.
  • Ability to develop a robust sourcing network.

Compensation:

This is a contract role. As a startup, we operate differently from traditional salary structures. We are reader-funded and building from the ground up. Compensation will be a percentage of subscription revenue, aligned with experience, with subscriptions priced at $25/month or $250/year.

Along with your resume, cover letter, social media handles (including X), and two published writing samples, please include a one-paragraph response to: "What is one under-reported political story in Peel Region that deserves more attention, and how would you approach covering it?"

For questions, contact ahmad@policorner.ca.
