Job description

BCIT’s Campus Planning and Facilities department is currently seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Plumber. This position carries out planned and emergency maintenance, repair, and installation of institute water, gas, drainage, air, heating systems, and backflow prevention assemblies.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Responding to trouble calls: Taking corrective action, troubleshooting problems on a wide variety of systems, often in emergency situations with non-standard solutions, prioritizing based on property and safety impact.
  2. Preventative Maintenance: Establishing priorities for the PM Plan, inspecting, identifying deficiencies, and taking corrective actions on interconnected systems.
  3. Estimating and reviewing: Labour and materials for renovations, upgrades, and projects, including reviewing project drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  4. Communication: Interacting with BCIT departments and external contractors, including explaining complex systems and managing difficult clients.
  5. Learning and development: Staying updated on new technologies, standards, and codes, and adapting older systems accordingly.
  6. System upgrades and documentation: Upgrading systems, preparing drawings, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects.
  7. Safety and compliance: Adhering to safety standards set by regulatory bodies and promoting safety practices.
  8. Work orders and repairs: Clearing stoppages, repairing and replacing fixtures, pipes, valves, and fittings, including minor structural work.
  9. Natural gas systems: Maintaining, servicing, and replacing gas systems, ensuring compliance with provincial standards.
  10. Inventory and equipment operation: Managing supplies and operating lifts, working at heights and in confined spaces.
  11. Contractor coordination: Monitoring contractor work to ensure standards are met.
  12. Additional duties: Performing any other tasks as assigned within the job grade.
Qualifications

The qualifications listed are the minimum requirements based on the job evaluation plan and are future-oriented.

  • A valid Trades Qualification or Interprovincial Trades Ticket (Journey person status), with relevant technical education/certifications; plus 2 years of general trades experience and up to 4 years of current relevant experience.
  • Ability to read blueprints and advise on trade requirements is an asset; capable of working independently.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for customer service.
  • Willingness to learn and stay current in the field.
  • Basic computer skills and training required.
