Job summary

Matalco Canada Inc. is seeking a PLC Technician to maintain, troubleshoot, program, and improve PLC systems and automation equipment across the facility.

This role is on the Maintenance team and collaborates with Production to ensure equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently. The PLC Technician will diagnose electrical and control issues, modify PLC programs, support automation projects, and assist with continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
• 3+ years of PLC programming and automation experience in manufacturing.
• Experience with Allen-Bradley Automation and related hardware.

Job Summary

The PLC Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, programming, and improving programmable logic controller (PLC) systems and industrial automation equipment throughout the facility. This position is on the Maintenance team and works closely with Production, and other departments to ensure equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently.

The PLC Technician will diagnose electrical and control system issues, modify and develop PLC programs, support automation projects, and assist with continuous improvement initiatives. The successful candidate will have strong troubleshooting skills, a safety-focused mindset, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The work hours are 5 days per week. The selected candidate must be available to work weekends, overtime, and be on call 24/7.

The salary range for this role is $62,000.00-$104,000.00

Key Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, maintain, modify, and program PLC systems and automated equipment.
• Diagnose PLC, electrical, controls, and automation issues to minimize equipment downtime.
• Develop and modify PLC and HMI programs to improve equipment performance, reliability, and safety.
• Troubleshoot and maintain VFDs, sensors, instrumentation, motors, control panels, and industrial communication networks.
• Support Maintenance and Production during equipment breakdowns and provide technical assistance.
• Assist with the installation, commissioning, start-up, and integration of new automation and control equipment.
• Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on PLC and automation systems.
• Identify recurring equipment issues and participate in root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Maintain backups and accurate documentation of PLC programs, control system changes, and equipment configurations.
• Support continuous improvement and automation projects to improve productivity, reliability, and efficiency.
• Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company safety policies, procedures, and LOTO requirements.
• Collaborate with Maintenance, Engineering, Production, and other departments to resolve technical issues and improve equipment performance.
• Provide technical guidance and support to electricians, maintenance personnel, and other team members as required.
• Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

• Proficient in programming and troubleshooting using RSLogix 5000 (ControlLogix).
• Strong knowledge of AB controllers, I/O modules, VFDs, SCADA systems, HMIs, and network protocols such as Ethernet, ControlNet, and DeviceNet.
• Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering Technology, Controls Engineering, Instrumentation, or a related field.
• 3+ years of experience in PLC programming, automation, and electrical troubleshooting in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Strong experience with PLC programming, troubleshooting, and modifications, preferably Allen-Bradley Automation.
• Experience with HMI systems, VFDs, sensors, instrumentation, motors, and industrial control systems.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
• Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of industrial safety practices, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and effectively with Maintenance, Production, and other departments.
• Experience in a heavy manufacturing, metals, or aluminum environment is an asset.
• 309A Electrician – Construction and Maintenance certificate preferred.
• 422A Industrial Electrician preferred
