Reporting to the Parks District Supervisor, Playgrounds, performs inspections and audits of play structures and conducts general maintenance related to the repair, replacement, and upkeep of components. The role includes ground maintenance activities for play structures, splash pads, tennis courts, bocce courts, and other multipurpose courts.
Work responsibilities include conducting playground safety inspections, providing technical assistance to supervisors, installing, repairing, and cleaning playground equipment, and collaborating with contractors and manufacturers on proper installation procedures.
The incumbent ensures that playground equipment complies with CSA and AODA regulations and manufacturer specifications through repairs, inspections, and necessary actions. Similar maintenance and inspection duties are performed for spray pads, skateparks, tennis courts, basketball courts, and bocce courts.
Maintains spray pads according to R.RO Regulation 565 for Public Pools, aiming for 'C' class standards.
Conducts in-depth safety inspections and audits on playground equipment in accordance with CAN/CSA-Z614-20 standards.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Performs inspections following current CSA standards for playground equipment.
- Responds to emergency conditions and requests from Police, Fire, Emergency Services, Risk Management, and Provincial Ministries, initiating corrective actions as appropriate.
- Performs monthly safety inspections at designated playgrounds and responds to emergency situations.
- Cleans and sanitizes play equipment and splash pads; removes graffiti; performs routine cleanup to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Maintains digital records related to playgrounds, splash pads, tennis, and courts using the City Reporter program.
- Coordinates and supervises contracted work.
- Maintains records of inspections and manufacturer information; performs inventory analysis and provides data for review and prioritization.
- Orders parts, supplies, and materials for routine maintenance, ensuring work vehicles are stocked.
- Performs maintenance on safety surfaces, including redistribution of materials like wood fibre or pea stone.
- Documents daily activities in a journal.
- Operates and maintains various hand, power, and shop tools, including saws, torches, drills, compressors, generators, welders, and multimeters.
- Operates equipment such as weed eaters, blowers, power washers, chainsaws, skid steers, loaders, and forklifts for maintenance and repairs.
- Performs onsite welding repairs and fabrications for playground and court equipment.
- Performs electrical repairs and troubleshooting related to splash pad PLCs, timers, sensors, and valves.
- Performs minor plumbing repairs and valve replacements on splash pads.
- Maintains fountain systems and inventories chemical supplies.
- Ensures proper training and safety procedures are followed by crew members, adhering to health and safety legislation and policies.
- Drives service vehicles and supports program delivery or complaint resolution activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, supporting the primary responsibilities of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Technical knowledge related to the duties listed above.
- Basic carpentry skills and experience with tools.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interaction with staff, the public, contractors, and suppliers.
- Experience in supervising, coaching, and mentoring staff.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and W.H.M.I.S. regulations.
- Current CPRA Certification in Playground Inspections and Maintenance.
- Welding training from Weldtech Training, Mohawk College, or an approved equivalent.
- Experience with computer applications like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to operate tools safely, including shop and power tools listed above.
- Certificates in Chainsaw, Forklift, Confined Space Entry, and Fall Arrest are assets or to be obtained within probation.
- Knowledge of PLC controllers for splash pads.
- Class G Driver's License is mandatory.
- Proof of license required after hire.
