Job summary

The State of Minnesota, Itasca Engineering Services, seeks a Plant Maintenance Engineer to provide professional building maintenance across State-owned facilities. You will operate mechanical, electrical, heating, cooling, and pneumatic systems, perform preventive maintenance, and support contracted service work.

Responsibilities include monitoring building automation, maintaining boilers and chillers, applying industrial water treatment, and upholding OSHA and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Must hold a First Class C Engineer's License.
• Valid Class D Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
• Ability to perform heavy physical tasks and pass a pre-employment physical including Work simulation.

The Plant Maintenance Engineer provides professional building maintenance services to ensure State-owned facilities remain clean, safe, efficient, and environmentally sound for employees, visitors, and the public. This role operates and maintains mechanical, electrical, heating, cooling, and pneumatic systems; performs preventive maintenance; troubleshoots and repairs building equipment; and supports contracted service work. Responsibilities include monitoring building automation systems, maintaining boilers and chillers, applying industrial water treatment, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and agency safety standards. The position works closely with the Plant Maintenance Engineer Chief and other Facilities Management staff to support reliable building operations and a strong safety culture.

Minimum Qualifications

• First Class C Engineer's License
• Valid Class D Driver's License with acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

• Broad plant maintenance experience involving repair of heating and ventilating equipment as a major focus.
• Experience with minor repair to heating and ventilating equipment or minor electrical repairs
• Coursework in steam engineering maintenance or repair (e.g., welding, plumbing, electricity, steam engineering, boiler operation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and steamfitting).

Physical Requirements

Must be able to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, personnel lifts, and boom trucks; lift and carry heavy loads for short distances; may be asked to work in confined spaces and outside in all weather conditions; and must be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs. occasionally.

A pre-employment physical (Work simulation equivalent minimum is medium, example: able to lift 22-30 LBS frequently).

Additional Requirements

Successful candidate must pass a criminal background check through American Data Bank and employment reference checks and a driver's license check.
