Job summary

City of Vaughan is seeking a Planning Technician to triage daily intake and route development planning applications to Municipal departments, Regional agencies, the Province of Ontario and other review partners, including conducting Pre-Application Consultation meetings under the Planning Act.

The role requires a university degree in planning or suitable equivalent, plus a minimum of 2 years of municipal planning experience.

Responsibilities

  • Triages daily intake and circulates development applications to internal and external partners.
  • Provides front counter, email and telephone service; responds to land-use inquiries.
  • Assists with FOI requests under Privacy Act.
  • Assists planners with hearing materials, research, and digitizing development files.
  • Supports development application reviews and report preparation to streamline workflows.

They’re responsible for triaging daily intake and circulation to Municipal departments, Regional agencies, the Province of Ontario and other review partners of all development planning applications, including conducting Pre-Application Consultation meetings by the Planning Act.

  • Candidates working in this post are responsible for ensuring correct Planning fees are submitted.
  • They’re also appointed to provide front counter, email and telephone services responding to general inquiries regarding land use designation, zoning requests, and development applications.
  • Candidates working in this post are responsible for processing all Freedom of Information (FOi) requests on behalf of the department under the legislated Privacy Act.
  • They’re also required to assist Planners with the preparation of Hearing materials, research, coordination digitizing new development files.
  • Candidates working at the post are appointed to assist planners in development application review and report preparation, to streamline workflow processes and enhance service levels.
Job requirement
  • They must have completed a university degree in planning or a suitable equivalent to be eligible for this post.
  • They must have a minimum of 2 years of planning, development or related municipal experience.
  • They must be provisional or full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners/ Ontario Professional Planners Institute.
  • Candidates must complete annual continuous professional learning requirements to maintain designation as a Registered Planning Professional.
  • They must attain excellent analytical abilities, with a thorough knowledge of analytical research methodologies and computerized analytical techniques.
  • Candidates must attain the ability to utilise analytical, organizational, report writing and communications skills.
  • Candidates must attain the ability to receive and handle confidential information through FOi requests.
Work setting
  • Candidates must know planning principles, practices, procedures, and standards and familiarity with local government, the political environment and relevant Federal and provincial policy and legislation.
