Job summary

City of Burnaby is seeking a Plan Checker 1 in the Plan Checking unit to review building plans and permit applications for single and two-family dwellings, ensuring compliance with the BC Building Code, regulations, and bylaws. This role combines technical plan review with clerical duties and client interactions.

You will examine plans for Part 9 regulated construction, identify non-conforming items, discuss findings with principals, and prepare and issue permits when regulations are met.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology or equivalent.
• Knowledge of municipal bylaws and the BC Building Code/regulations.
• Ability to interpret building construction plans and perform calculations.
• Prepare routine correspondence and reports; interact tactfully with contractors, architects/engineers, and the public.

Responsibilities

• Check plans for compliance with Part 9 BC Building Code for single and two-family dwellings.
• List non-conforming items and discuss them with principals involved.
• Prepare and issue building permits when regulations are satisfied.
• Carry out drafting, filing, record maintenance, and respond to inquiries from inspectors and municipal staff.
