Durham College in Oshawa is seeking a Part-time Placement Liaison to guide students in applying learning outcomes during field placements. You will provide coaching, review documentation, and monitor progress in partnership with college staff and placement hosts.

The role emphasizes proactive intervention, strong communication, and mediation to ensure successful placements and adherence to college policies. Applicants should have a four-year degree and LSO licensure is preferred.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a 4-year post-secondary degree.
  • A current licensee with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO).
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience in an education, community or legal setting providing advising, coaching and feedback.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills gained through related employment experience or professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply equity, diversity and inclusion as well as intersectionality when interpreting policy and responding to situations.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to develop professional and collaborative relationships with hosts.
  • Considered a strong asset if the incumbent has education or work experience in Paralegal, Law Clerk, 911 Emergency & Call Centre Communications, Police Foundations, Protection, Security and Investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, coaching and feedback to students regarding expectations to ensure that behaviours such as lack of attendance and lack of professionalism are proactively addressed.
  • Review all course requirements, including but not limited to dockets, activities, and observations.
  • Proactively intervene with students and placement hosts when concerns arise; convene meetings, collect documentation and/or conduct site visits.
  • Conduct site visits to ensure students practice and demonstrate learning outcomes.
  • Ensure strong working relationships with placement hosts and mediate concerns.
  • Escalate concerns to the Associate Dean with clear documentation and adherence to policies.
  • Assist the Associate Dean in resolving concerns by gathering information and scheduling meetings.
  • Meet with students removed from placement to set expectations for re-engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with Student Advisors / Field Placement Officers and staff to support placement success.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Placement Liaison(PL) role is tohelp students actualize the application of their placement learning outcomes inthe field by providing guidance, coaching and feedback. The PL is responsiblefor ensuring that all required placement documentation is collected andreviewed including timesheets, dockets, mid-term and final evaluations. The PL is responsible for monitoring theprogress of students throughout their placements including via in person sitevisits when required by the program or as needed to support student success.

Acritical component of this role is to proactively intervene when concerns arisethroughout the placement process. The PLis expected to problem-solve with the student and the placement site and isaccountable for negotiating and mediating concerns as well as ensuring thatexpectations are clearly communicated.To accomplish this, the PL will regularly consult with various collegeofficials including Student Advisors / Field Placement Officers, facultymembers and program coordinators.Finally, the PL is responsible for escalating concerns to the AssociateDean when needed and ensuring that Durham College (DC) and the Faculty ofSocial and Community Services (FSCS) policies and procedures are diligentlyfollowed.

Asa PL, you will:

  • Provide guidance, coaching and feedback to students regarding expectations to ensure that behaviours such as lack of attendance and lack of professionalism are proactively addressed and students are provided with opportunities to course correct.
  • Review all course requirements, including but not limited to dockets, activities, and observations.
  • Proactively intervene with students and placement hosts when concerns arise. This may require convening meetings, collecting documentation and/or conducting a site visit. The PL will be required to negotiate and/or mediate solutions, document next steps and monitor progress.
  • Conduct site visits, when necessary, to ensure that students are provided with opportunities to practice and demonstrate required learning outcomes.
  • Ensure strong working relationships are in place with placement hosts and to mediate concerns.
  • Escalate concerns to the Associate Dean, ensuring that information is clearly and concisely presented and well documented pursuant to college policies and faculty procedures.
  • Assist the Associate Dean in resolving concerns which may include gathering additional information, scheduling meetings or providing further intervention.
  • Meet with students who have been removed from placement due to performance concerns, engage students in reflection to ensure expectations are set for re-engagement with future field placements
  • Work collaboratively with Student Advisors /Field Placement Officers and other staff to support student placement success.
