Job summary

Norland Limited in BC's East and West Kootenays is seeking a Pipelayer to install underground piping systems including water, sanitary sewer, and storm lines. You will read drawings, set grades, and coordinate with foremen and operators to ensure safe, on-time installations.

The role requires 2-5+ years in civil construction, knowledge of underground utilities, and the ability to work in trenches and around heavy equipment. A valid driver's license is preferred and transportation is an asset.

Qualifications

• 2-5+ years of pipelayer experience in civil construction.
• Knowledge of underground utility installation practices.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and grades.
• Experience working around heavy equipment and in trench environments.
• Physically fit and able to perform demanding manual labour.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Valid driver’s license preferred.
• Your own transportation is an asset as the sites are not always on the transit routes.

Responsibilities

• Install underground pipe systems including water, sanitary, and storm (PVC, HDPE, concrete, ductile iron)
• Read and interpret construction drawings, grade stakes, and laser levels
• Ensure proper pipe alignment, grade, and elevation
• Prepare trenches, including checking bedding, compaction, and trench safety
• Direct equipment operators during trenching, lifting, and backfilling operations
• Perform tie-ins, connections, and pressure testing support
• Install manholes, catch basins, and related structures
• Identify and manage underground hazards and existing utilities
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment
• Work closely with foremen, operators, and labourers to complete tasks efficiently

The Pipelayer

is responsible for the installation, alignment, and connection of underground piping systems including water, sanitary sewer, and storm systems, ensuring all work meets project specifications and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Certifications (Assets)

• CSTS (Construction Safety Training System)
• Confined Space Entry / Monitor
• Ground Disturbance Level II (or equivalent)
• Occupational First Aid (Level 1 or higher)
• Pipe laser and grade checking experience

Working Conditions

• Outdoor work in all weather conditions
• Physically demanding (lifting, bending, working in trenches)
• Early mornings, overtime, and weekend work as required
• Travel between project sites may be required

Compensation

This is a Unionized position with Copcan - CSWU Craft Labourers. This position will earn Union wages and will have access to extended Union healthcare and benefits, a Union-sponsored pension plan, and additional training through the Training Plan. Expected hourly rate: Unionized wage range for this position is $27.23 - $43.19 per hour (based on candidate's experience), plus 12% vacation/statutory holiday pay.
