Job summary

Copcan Civil, part of Norland Limited, is hiring Pipelayers in Nanaimo, Victoria, and Duncan BC on Vancouver Island. The role involves installation and connection of underground piping systems across sites, with travel between project locations as needed.

Qualifications

• 2–5+ years of pipelayer experience in civil construction.
• Strong knowledge of underground utility installation practices.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and grades accurately.
• Experience around heavy equipment and in trench environments.
• Physically fit and capable of demanding manual labour.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Install underground pipe systems including water, sanitary, and storm (PVC, HDPE, concrete, ductile iron).
• Read and interpret construction drawings, grade stakes, and laser levels.
• Ensure proper pipe alignment, grade, and elevation.
• Prepare trenches, including bedding checks, compaction, and trench safety.
• Direct equipment operators during trenching, lifting, and backfilling operations.
• Perform tie-ins, connections, and pressure testing support.
• Install manholes, catch basins, and related structures.
• Identify and manage underground hazards and existing utilities.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
• Work closely with foremen, operators, and labourers to complete tasks efficiently.

We are looking for Pipelayers to join our team in Nanaimo, Victoria, and Duncan BC ( Vancouver Island)

Copcan Civil, part of Norland Limited, is an award-winning civil construction company with offices on the Island in both Nanaimo and Victoria. Copcan has been in business since 1970, Copcan Civil has successfully completed projects across Vancouver Island and the BC Interior, including highways, bridge construction, underground utilities, demolition, marine infrastructure, private development, and municipal works.

This role involves working on job sites that involves underground utility, civil, and construction projects across the area. Work locations may include surrounding communities.

You will need to be able to get to locations that are not on the transit route.

The Pipelayer is responsible for the installation, alignment, and connection of underground piping systems including water, sanitary sewer, and storm systems, ensuring all work meets project specifications and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Install underground pipe systems including water, sanitary, and storm (PVC, HDPE, concrete, ductile iron)
• Read and interpret construction drawings, grade stakes, and laser levels
• Ensure proper pipe alignment, grade, and elevation

Qualifications & Requirements

• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Valid driver’s license (preferred)

Certifications (Assets)

• CSTS (Construction Safety Training System)
• Confined Space Entry / Monitor
• Ground Disturbance Level II (or equivalent)
• Occupational First Aid (Level 1 or higher)
• Pipe laser and grade checking experience

Working Conditions

• Outdoor work in all weather conditions
• Physically demanding (lifting, bending, working in trenches)
• Early mornings, overtime, and weekend work as required
• Travel between project sites may be required

Compensation

This is a Unionized position. Expected hourly rate: Unionized wage range for this position is $32.62 - $42.19 per hour (based on candidate’s experience), plus 12% vacation/statutory holiday pay.
