Department: 3E IP Surgery, LHAP

Status: Regular Full Time

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Physician Assistant (PA) will work with our interdisciplinary team primarily in screening, initial assessment, treatment and monitoring of Orthopedic patients presenting for routine procedures and urgent care needs for trauma, hip and knee arthritis and / or joint replacement surgery. The PA role will be focused on Perioperative Orthopedic care for the in-patient setting. In general, the PA will work under the direct supervision of the Physician and will be responsible for patient navigation and flow improvement on the Surgical unit. The candidate's responsibilities may vary depending on the specific needs of the patients and the support required within the surgical program. Responsibilities include thorough patient assessment, comprehensive physical exams, ordering and interpreting medical investigations such as blood tests, imaging and other diagnostic procedures, performing minor procedures, diagnosing and treating illness and providing patient and family education. The PA will perform on-call duties during the day to assist with in-patient consults and will maintain detailed medical documentation, including consult notes, progress notes, discharge summaries, admission orders and discharge orders. Other specific duties and additional opportunities to support the Orthopedic program development will be assigned as the PA's skill set evolves.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program (Canadian/US) or equivalent.
* Certification by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada or the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA);
* Flexible with superior organization skills and the ability to work efficiently to prioritize multiple, competing tasks in a fast-paced and dynamic environment;
* Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, make decisions and take initiative while working with confidential patient information and responding to patient inquiries;
* Superior work ethic, professionalism and reliability; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service;
* Superior written/oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to effectively convey factual information and detailed explanations;
* Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients;
* Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public;
* Must have satisfactory performance record;
* Demonstrated commitment to our core values of Inclusion, Compassion, Innovation, Teamwork and Joy;
* Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff, patient and environmental safety and participation in regular in-services in this area; and;
