Responsibilities

• Operate PTF to take data of PMTs and Hyper-K photosensors and perform analysis using ROOT and Python.
• Develop and debug modelling of the system with simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, GEANT4).
• Assist with operation tasks including motor-controllers, magnetic field measurements, and signal digitizers.
• Assist with maintenance and upgrades of PTF components such as gantry system and PMT mounts.

Since their discovery in 1998, we have learnt a great deal about the parameters that govern these oscillations, but many questions remain. Perhaps the most exciting of these is whether neutrino oscillations violate charge-parity (CP) symmetry, which could potentially explain why we live in a matter-dominated universe.Super-Kamiokande (Super-K) has been one of the longest-running and most successful particle physics experiments of its generation. Its measurements of solar, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrinos have revealed much about the nature of these ghostly particles, culminating in the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2015 and the Breakthrough Prize in 2016. Since 2018, Super-K has undergone significant upgrades to load the detector with gadolinium (Gd) for measuring the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). In addition to Super-K, the TRIUMF neutrino group is also involved in the next-generation Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) experiment in Japan, which aims to provide a definitive answer on CP violation in the lepton sector. One of the biggest challenges for both Super-K and Hyper-K is achieving a complete understanding of the photosensors that line the inner walls of these detectors — the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The current understanding of the PMTs needs to be significantly improved to reduce detector systematic uncertainties and reach the full physics potential of the experiments, particularly for the CP-violation measurement.The photosensor test facility (PTF) at TRIUMF is a unique facility that can perform such a task. The PTF is designed to carry out detailed characterization of PMTs. Its key feature is the ability to fire laser light at a PMT submerged in water, from arbitrary angles and positions. This is achieved using an optical head that is translated and rotated via a motor-controlled gantry system. One of the goals of this position is to assist with data taking using PTF, as well as with the data analysis and modelling of the PMT response.**Duties:**- Operate PTF to take data of Super-K PMTs and newly developed Hyper-K photosensors, and following analysis (ROOT, Python).- Development and debugging of the modelling of the system with simulation tools (e.g. COMSOL, GEANT4).- Assist with many elements of operation, such as motor-controllers, magnetic field measurements, and electrical pulse digitizers.- Assist with maintenance and potential upgrades of PTF components, such as gantry system, optical boxes, Helmholtz coils, PMT mounts and cabling**Skills Learned During This Work Experience:**- Experience in many aspects of a complicated physics problem.
