Qualifications

• An accredited CCAPP pharmacy technician training program OR currently enrolled in a bridging program.
• Licensure as a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Nova Scotia Pharmacy Regulator plus annual malpractice insurance per NSPR guidelines, OR eligible to be licensed.
• Ethical, Legal and Professional – practice within the legal requirements and uphold standards.
• Patient Care – collaborate with patient, pharmacist and health professionals to meet health goals.
• Product Distribution – ensure safe and accurate distribution of medications.
• Practice setting – contribute to the management of the drug distribution system.
• Quality and safety – participate in developing policies for quality and safety.
• Knowledge of NAPRA Model Standards of Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.
• Ability to perform final technical checks and identify incorrect preparations.
• Knowledge of centralized/decentralized pharmacy automation and systems.
• Knowledge of generic/chemical names of medications.
• Proficiency in sterile and non-sterile compounding.
• Knowledge of Controlled Drugs & Substances Act, F&D Act and Schedules.
• Accurate medication calculations.
• Effective communication with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals.
• Commitment to continuous learning.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safe medication preparation and dispensing for medications prepared and delivered by the pharmacy department.
• Perform final technical check of prepared medications prior to distribution.
• Take telephone medication order clarifications from physicians.
• Conduct narcotic destruction as mandated by Health Canada.
• Precept pharmacy technician students pursuing their diploma and licensure.
• Administer medications by injection (permit required) and provide technical education on medications.
• Conduct BPMH (best possible medication histories).
• Follow all federal and provincial legislation and pharmacy practice standards.
• Be professionally accountable for activities and follow NPRA/NAPR standards.
• Work with automation/technology such as automated cabinets and hospital information systems.
• Demonstrate knowledge of medication names and preparation processes.
• Perform sterile and non-sterile compounding including hazardous and non-hazardous compounds.
• Apply understanding of relevant acts and schedules and perform medication calculations.
• Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals.
• Commit to continuous learning and adapt to fast-paced environments.
