Overview
The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for carrying out functions of a technical and clerical nature complemented by their therapeutic knowledge in Hospital Pharmacy Practice. These functions include, but are not limited to : drug distribution, inventory control, intravenous admixture preparation, nonsterile compounding, and other components of pharmacy technician practice. The practice standards are outlined by the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) and the Ontario College of Pharmacists, including the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. The Pharmacy Technician will collaborate with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to support patient care, demonstrate commitment to healthcare quality and safety, maintain competence in drug distribution systems, and adhere to all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. The role may require working at different sites as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with pharmacists and healthcare professionals according to practice standards outlined by NAPRA and the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
- Adhere to all professional, ethical, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, complying with occupational health and safety policies.
- Participate in quality assurance and risk management programs.
- Assist in training new staff and students.
- Participate in departmental committees and continuing education.
- Work flexible shifts including days, evenings, nights, and weekends.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the pharmacy manager or designate.
- Support staff and patient safety initiatives, reporting adverse events or incidents.
Technical and Operational Duties
- Perform technical functions such as drug repackaging, unit dose filling, sterile and non-sterile compounding, narcotic management, and inventory control.
- Prepare and verify prescriptions and medication orders.
- Respond to inquiries and manage medication deliveries and returns.
- Operate pharmacy equipment competently.
Inventory and Admixture Management
- Manage narcotics and controlled substances inventory, perform audits, and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Prepare sterile products and I.V. admixtures, including TPN and chemotherapy drugs.
- Maintain accurate records and perform routine inspections for expired stock.
Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized Canadian pharmacy technician education program or equivalent.
- Current registration as a PART A Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
- Proof of continuing education and malpractice insurance.
- Experience in hospital pharmacy, sterile / non-sterile compounding, and unit dose dispensing is an asset.
- Familiarity with pharmacy software systems (e.g., Cerner, Omnicell).
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle stress professionally and maintain confidentiality.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to lift moderate loads.
- Membership in a professional pharmacy association is an asset.
- Adherence to hospital safety and health policies.
