Overview

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for carrying out functions of a technical and clerical nature complemented by their therapeutic knowledge in Hospital Pharmacy Practice. These functions include, but are not limited to: drug distribution, inventory control, intravenous admixture preparation, nonsterile compounding, and other components of pharmacy technician practice. Practice standards are outlined by the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) and the Ontario College of Pharmacists, including the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. The Pharmacy Technician will collaborate with pharmacists and healthcare professionals to support patient care, demonstrate commitment to quality and safety, and adhere to all relevant legislated and regulatory requirements. The role may require working at different sites as assigned.

Responsibilities

  1. Work collaboratively with pharmacists and healthcare professionals according to practice standards outlined by NAPRA and the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
  2. Adhere to all Pharmacy Technician requirements, codes of ethics, and conduct standards.
  3. Follow departmental policies, maintain a clean workplace, and participate in safety inspections.
  4. Participate in quality assurance, risk management programs, and departmental committees.
  5. Support staff and patient safety initiatives, report adverse events or incidents.
  6. Perform technical aspects of drug distribution, including repackaging, unit dose filling, sterile and non-sterile compounding, narcotics management, and inventory control.
  7. Prepare and verify prescriptions, respond to inquiries, and operate pharmacy equipment.
  8. Manage inventory, including narcotics, controlled drugs, and emergency kits, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  9. Prepare sterile products such as IV admixtures and chemotherapy drugs following protocols.
  10. Maintain records, perform audits, and support various rotations such as purchasing, oncology, and training.
  11. Complete recognized pharmacy technician education, maintain licensure, and participate in continuing education.
  12. Possess relevant experience, including sterile/non-sterile compounding and electronic health records familiarity.
  13. Maintain professionalism, organizational skills, and the ability to work under stress.
