Job summary

Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre is seeking a Registered Pharmacy Technician to join the Ontario Public Service health care team. You will process prescriptions, maintain inventory, and support safe, patient-centered pharmaceutical care for individuals in custody.

In this role you collaborate with pharmacists, nurses, physicians and other health professionals within a secure correctional setting, upholding professional standards and Ontario regulations while contributing to positive health

Qualifications

• Registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists, or in CCAPP-accredited program process.
• Knowledge of drug therapy and current treatment modalities.
• Understanding of controlled substance regulations and record maintenance.
• Metrology, pharmaceutical calculations, and weights/measures.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, package, and label medications.
• Maintain medication inventory and monitor expiry dates.
• Update patient medication profiles and health records.

About the job

As a Registered Pharmacy Technician, you will:

• Receive, process, and fill prescriptions
• Prepare, package, and label medications
• Maintain medication inventory and monitor expiry dates
• Update patient medication profiles and health records
• Support medication distribution and documentation processes
• Prepare reports and maintain pharmacy records
• Ensure pharmacy operations meet professional standards and institutional security requirements

Mandatory requirements

• You are registered and in good standing as a Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists, or are in the process of completing a CCAPP-accredited Canadian Pharmacy Technician program.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of drug therapy, evidence-based pharmaceutical practice, current treatment modalities, and community pharmacy resources
• Knowledge of Ontario College of Pharmacists Professional Standards and best practices
• Understanding of controlled substance regulations and record maintenance procedures
• Knowledge of metrology, pharmaceutical calculations, and systems of weights and measures
• Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, including: Regulated Health Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act and Mental Health Act
• Knowledge of medication distribution systems and inventory management practices

Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills

• Exercise sound judgment and work independently within established pharmaceutical guidelines
• Ensure medication orders comply with applicable policies and standards
• Identify and document unusual trends in medication usage
• Investigate discrepancies in medication inventory or supply and investigate discrepancies appropriately
• Prioritize work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail

Computer Skills

• Computerized pharmacy order-entry and manual pharmacy record keeping systems
• Inventory control and medication management systems
• Microsoft Office applications and related technologies

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, health care staff, and institutional partners
• Respond to inquiries with sensitivity, professionalism, and respect
• Explain medication usage and potential side effects when appropriate
• Prepare reports, correspondence, and documentation related to pharmaceutical services
