As Canada’s largest mental health care provider, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) provides evidence to drive system and policy change through the implementation of innovations and novel service delivery interventions. The Brain Health Imaging Centre (BHIC) is one of the primary research areas of CAMH and focuses on new brain imaging tools and methods used in mental health and addictions for clinical neuroscience research.

Position Description:

The BHIC is currently seeking a full-time permanent PET Systems Engineer, reporting to the Manager, Engineering Division. The PET Systems Engineer is responsible for the routine maintenance and servicing of the BHIC medical cyclotrons, commercial and in-house built automated radiochemistry equipment, radiation safety systems, PET, CT, and MRI scanners for both human and preclinical use, with ancillary devices, related imaging equipment for preclinical studies, and associated computer networking infrastructure. These tasks will include operating the equipment, troubleshooting problems and performing repairs; maintenance and repair of imaging equipment and ancillary devices; the design, manufacturing, and testing of specialized devices for radiochemistry, PET imaging and physics experimentation and measurements; and the quality control of equipment and the development of quality assurance procedures to optimize the performance of the equipment and minimize device failure. This position is located on-site at 250 College Street.

Duties:

  • Work with radiochemistry managers to design and implement maintenance protocols for all radiosynthesis modules.
  • Develop documentation for cyclotron, radiosynthesis module, hot cell and radiation monitoring system maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain a shop safety manual.
  • Ensure all lab cyclotron and lab radiation monitoring equipment is calibrated as per CNSC specifications.
  • BHIC Cyclotrons: perform emergency repairs and scheduled preventative maintenance of all mechanical and electrical cyclotron subsystems including but not limited to the RF system, power supplies, vacuum pumps, water and helium cooling systems, beam extraction system, control and safety systems, and targets.
  • Radiochemistry: operational and physical maintenance of the equipment used for the production and quality control of Positron-Emitting Radiopharmaceuticals (PERs) in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment (or equivalent) and R&D labs, including radio synthesis units, hot cell equipment, control and related equipment, associated computers and software.
  • Radiation Safety Monitoring Equipment: maintenance and repair of the BHIC radiation monitoring system;
  • Imaging: Maintain and repair PET imaging equipment and ancillary devices;
  • IT Infrastructure: develop, implement, maintain, upgrade, and support of IT systems including BHIC internal specialized computer networks, data servers, workstations and associated hardware.
  • Quality Assurance: participate in and support the BHIC quality assurance program.
  • Safety: adhere and promote the highest standards of engineering, radiation safety and workplace practices for self, co-workers, research participants, CAMH staff, and the public.
  • Compliance: perform all work in compliance to all applicable legislation including, but not limited to, those under the Nuclear Control and Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Compliance with internal policies and procedures: perform all duties in compliance with CAMH policies and procedures, and those specific to the Brain Health Imaging Centre.
  • Provide support to the Manager, Engineering Division as needed for other initiatives.

The successful candidate will possess a degree in a relevant engineering field in addition to a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the electrical/mechanical aspects of operating, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining cyclotrons, radiochemistry devices, PET and PET/CT scanners, radiation monitoring equipment, and PET ancillary equipment. Proficiency with setting up computer hardware is required, and computer programming and software (LabVIEW) as well as experience with networks, would be an asset. Experience in at least 5 of the 8 following areas is also an asset:

  • RF
  • Process control (i.e. analog and digital processing and monitoring)
  • PLC programming and use, specifically Siemens Step 7
  • Radiation monitoring
  • Mechanical systems
  • Computers, computer programming (LabVIEW experience would be an asset) and computer networks
  • Electronic and Electrical systems

Knowledge of radiation safety regulations is required and experience working in a Class II facility is preferred. Knowledge of the guidelines and/or experience working in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment, or equivalent, is required. Experience supporting a specialized computer network infrastructure in a research and/or manufacturing environment is a requirement. You are able to work independently as well as effectively and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. The duties of this position require that the PET Systems Engineer be designated as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). Candidates require the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.

Designation as a Nuclear Energy Worker is mandatory for this position and will be arranged for the successful candidate.
