Job summary

Providence Care at Providence Manor in Kingston is seeking a Personal Support Worker (PSW) to support 24-hour resident care with a focus on dignity and safety. You will follow care plans, assist with daily living activities, and work under the guidance of nursing staff in a 243-bed facility.

The role requires a PSW diploma and may prefer prior long-term care or dementia/palliative care experience, with CPR/First Aid certification as an asset.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a Personal Support Worker Diploma/Certificate Program from an accredited educational institution.
• Prior working or practicum experience in a long-term care home or community support services program, preferred.
• Successful completion of Gentle Persuasive Approach and similar programs, preferred.
• Prior work experience and training in dementia care and palliative care, preferred.
• CPR Basic Rescuer and first-aid certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

• The PSW will perform only those acts for which she or he has been properly trained.
• Takes direction from Charge RN, RN or RPN regarding priority-setting and the delivery of care.
• Familiarizes self with the care plan of residents to whom she/he is assigned to provide care.
• Follows a consistent approach when interacting with residents who may exhibit difficult behaviours.
• Provides direct-care for residents as outlined in the written care plan or as requested by the resident.
• Direct care encompasses but is not limited to: assistance with activities of daily living; exercise, positioning and ambulation; bowel and bladder care; collection of specimens; any other care required to ensure resident safety and comfort
• Provides, removes and cleans bedpan and or urinal at regular intervals and upon resident’s request.
• Assists resident to and from bathroom and monitors as required.

Providence Manor is a 243-bed long-term care home located in downtown Kingston. The home provides care for residents who have stable medical conditions, but require 24-hour nursing care.

The Personal Support Worker (PSW), under the direction of the Assistant Director of Care, Charge RN, RN or RPN, is the primary front-line monitor of resident well- being and reports any changes in resident status or concerns to the registered nursing staff. The PSW assists in the delivery of high-quality, person-centered care on assigned Resident Home Areas. Duties are discharged in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values of Providence Care Centre, the Resident’s Bill of Rights, and the requirements of-the Fixing Long Term Care Act and Regulations. The PSW delivers basic nursing and hygiene care for residents and assists them with activities of daily living, based on assessed needs and care-plan requirements
