Job Summary
The Personal Support Worker provides personal support and homemaking services to clients and families within VON policies, collaborating with the healthcare team to promote client independence and well-being. Responsibilities include ensuring safety, maintaining a clean environment, building trusting relationships, and participating in social activities.
This position is eligible for a $3.00 / hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for hours spent directly caring for clients.
Responsibilities
- Assess and evaluate clients' needs and home environment, recommending changes to care plans as needed.
- Assist in developing and implementing personal support care plans under supervision.
- Report changes in client needs or home situations to supervisors.
- Perform personal support tasks such as light cleaning, meal prep, clothing care, shopping, and household safety monitoring.
- Provide personal care including mobility assistance, hygiene, and dressing as directed.
- Provide respite and child care support as needed.
- Organize daily activities and prioritize support tasks.
- Complete required documentation and calls to ensure service efficiency.
- Communicate effectively with clients, families, and health team members regarding care and needs.
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and VON policies.
- Other duties as assigned.
External and Internal Relationships
- Maintain regular communication with supervisors and care managers on client needs and care plans.
Education, Designations, and Experience
- Certificate in Personal Support Worker or Developmental Services Worker diploma.
- Minimum 2 years experience as a PSW or DSW.
- Current Standard First Aid or CPR Level C certification.
- Experience supporting individuals with dementia and responsive behaviors preferred.
- Experience working with elderly or disabled individuals.
Skill Requirements

- Ability to work independently or in a team.
- Ability to follow directions and adapt to different environments.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Other Requirements
- Personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check; Vulnerable Sector Search or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
- Flexible availability and use of PPE required.
Working conditions involve physical activity such as lifting, bending, reaching, and walking, with emphasis on body mechanics.
