Job summary

Providence Manor in Kingston invites applications for a Part-Time Personal Support Worker (PSW). Under supervision, the PSW delivers basic nursing and hygiene care, assists with activities of daily living, and supports residents according to the care plan while prioritizing safety and comfort.

The successful candidate has a PSW diploma, prior long-term care or community care experience is preferred, and CPR/First Aid certification is beneficial.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a Personal Support Worker Diploma/Certificate Program from an accredited educational institution.
• Prior work experience in a long-term care home or community support services is preferred.
• CPR Basic Rescuer and first-aid certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• The PSW will perform only those acts for which she or he has been properly trained.
• Takes direction from Charge RN, RN or RPN regarding priority-setting and the delivery of care.
• Familiarizes self with the care plan of residents to provide care.
• Follows a consistent approach when interacting with residents with difficult behaviours.
• Provides direct-care for residents as outlined in the care plan, including activities of daily living and safety support.
• Provides, removes and cleans bedpan or urinal as requested.
• Assists residents to and from bathroom and monitors as required.

Providence Manor is a 243-bed long-term care home located in downtown Kingston. The home provides care for residents who have stable medical conditions, but require 24-hour nursing care.

The Personal Support Worker (PSW), under the direction of the Assistant Director of Care, Charge RN, RN or RPN, is the primary front-line monitor of resident well- being and reports any changes in resident status or concerns to the registered nursing staff. The PSW assists in the delivery of high-quality, person-centered care on assigned Resident Home Areas. Duties are discharged in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values of Providence Care Centre, the Resident’s Bill of Rights, and the requirements of-the Fixing Long Term Care Act and Regulations. The PSW delivers basic nursing and hygiene care for residents and assists them with activities of daily living, based on assessed needs and care-plan requirements

Skills and Qualifications Required:

• Successful completion of a Personal Support Worker Diploma/Certificate Program from an accredited educational institution
• Prior working or practicum experience in a long-term care home or community support services program, preferred
• Successful completion of Gentle Persuasive Approach and similar programs, preferred
• Prior work experience and training in dementia care and palliative care, preferred
• CPR Basic Rescuer and first-aid certification, preferred

Position Responsibilities:

• The PSW will perform only those acts for which she or he has been properly trained.
• Takes direction from Charge RN, RN or RPN regarding priority-setting and the delivery of care.
• Familiarizes self with the care plan of residents to whom she/he is assigned to provide care.
• Follows a consistent approach when interacting with residents who may exhibit difficult behaviours.
• Provides direct-care for residents as outlined in the written care plan or as requested by the resident. Direct care encompasses but is not limited to: assistance with activities of daily living; exercise, positioning and ambulation; bowel and bladder care; collection of specimens; any other care required to ensure resident safety and comfort
• Provides, removes and cleans bedpan and or urinal at regular intervals and upon resident’s request.
• Assists resident to and from bathroom and monitors as required.
