Overview
The Personal Support Worker participates in direct and indirect patient care activities to implement the Interprofessional care plan. Activities are directed and assigned by the RN or RPN. Key responsibilities include:
- Performing basic patient care functions to support the care plan.
- Assisting with patient nutritional needs.
- Contributing to patient information collection and documentation.
- Practicing infection control and safety measures to ensure high standards of care and safety.
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment for patient care and treatment.
- Contributing to patient assessment.
- Performing transportation functions.
- Carrying out departmental duties while adhering to confidentiality policies.
- Performing cross-functional duties as required by job classification or clinical specialty.
Education
- Personal support worker certificate or diploma from an accredited college.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
Qualifications
- 1-2 years of surgical experience within the last 3 years.
- Willingness to work across all areas of the health service, depending on skills and abilities.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and relevant legislation.
- Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
- Understanding of hospital and departmental policies, procedures, protocols, and practices.
- Knowledge of Emergency Codes.
- Ability to perform moderately heavy work involving lifting, walking, standing, bending, pushing, and pulling equipment.
- Knowledge of infection control practices.
- Positive attitude and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
- Aptitude for fostering caring and trusting relationships with patients and families.
- Ability to maintain consistent productivity and efficiency.
- Customer-focused and courteous in responsibilities.
- Adherence to confidentiality requirements under MGH Privacy Policy.
- Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Patient service orientation with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Good work and attendance record.
- Responsibility to work within the practices of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario.
