Job Description

VON Canada's eHomecare program is growing, and we are currently seeking Personal Support Workers (PSWs), Health Care Technicians, for Part-Time opportunities! Various part-time positions may be 0.8 FTE = 64 hours bi-weekly, 0.6 FTE = 48 hours bi-weekly, 0.5 FTE = 40 hours bi-weekly, Casual. Job Summary

Our Health Care Technicians, specializing in Palliative and/or Acute Medically Complex care, have unique opportunities to utilize their skills daily with clients in their homes. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Directing RN (DRN), the Care Technician provides direct, hands-on care, collaborating with nursing staff and utilizing a virtual electronic monitoring system for real-time communication and updates.

Training will be provided to support advanced skill development.

This position is eligible for a $3.00 per hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours spent directly caring for clients.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Observe and document clinical data in the electronic medical record as per VON guidelines, under the direction of the DRN.
  2. Provide personal care supporting activities of daily living and medication administration.
  3. Maintain real-time communication with the DRN via electronic monitoring systems.
  4. Contribute to care plan development and modifications based on patient outcomes.
  5. Identify additional resource needs in the home and coordinate scheduling.
  6. Communicate with clients' families to ensure positive care experiences.
External and Internal Relationships
  • Regular communication with Registered Nurses.
  • Interaction with clients and their families.
  • Coordination with eShift administrative staff.
Qualifications
  • Personal Support Worker (PSW) certification.
  • Developmental Support Worker (DSW) certification considered.
  • 1-2 years’ experience as a PSW in palliative, pediatric, or acute care.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Knowledge of Palliative Care Level I (training or willingness to complete within first year).
  • AHPCE course completion is an asset.
Skills and Abilities
  • Competency in clinical skills supporting daily activities (e.g., medication administration, G-Tube feeds).
  • Ability to adapt to various social and economic environments.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Strong communication and observational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to wear PPE and have access to a personal vehicle with valid license and insurance.
  • Willingness to travel to neighboring communities.
  • Current criminal background check including vulnerable sector screening.
Work Conditions

Attention to detail; physical ability to lift, push, pull, and perform body mechanics; ability to walk, sit, stand, climb stairs; manual dexterity.
