Job summary

Southbridge Care Homes is seeking a Personal Support Worker (PSW) for Oshawa, ON. This casual, on-call role reports to the Director of Care and involves direct resident care across day, evening, and night shifts.

The position requires completion of a PSW program (600 hours) with knowledge of care planning, documentation, and strong communication with residents and families.

Qualifications

• PSW program completed meeting regulatory standards (600 hours total).
• Experience in long-term care is an asset.
• Must read/write English and understand instructions in English.
• Ability to communicate positively with staff, residents and families.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Assist with direct resident care including ambulation, feeding, bathing and grooming.
• Encourage resident participation in activities and accompany to programs.
• Assist with meals and feeding when required.
• Provide emotional and social support including palliative care.
• Follow policies on documentation, quality assurance, safety, infection control.
• Inform supervisor of unit activities and resident care needs.
• Participate in care conferences and maintain resident care plans.

Hourly Wage: starting at $27.48

Position: Personal Support Worker (PSW)

Status: Casual (On call)

Schedule: All Shifts (Days, Evenings, Nights)

Reports to: Director of Care

The Personal Support Worker provides direct personal and nursing care to residents to fulfil the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual needs of residents in accordance to home polices, procedure and work routines.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assists in providing direct care for residents; assists with ambulation, feeding, bathing and grooming.


• Encourages participation in activity programs by assisting residents to and from activities.


• Assists with meal service and nourishment delivery to residents and provides feeding assistance as required.


• Provides emotional and social support to residents/families including palliative care.


• Adheres to established departmental polices and procedures regarding documentation, quality assurance, fire, safety, environment and infection control.


• Consults with and informs supervisor of unit activities, needs and matters related to resident care.


• Participates in care conferences and documentation related to resident care plans.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

• Completed a PSW Program that meets the appropriate standards established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, the National Association of Career Colleges, or the Ontario Community Support Association and must be a minimum of 600 hours in duration (including class time and practical experience time)


• Experience in long-term care an asset


• Knowledge and experience in care planning systems and documentation required


• Mentally and physically able to perform duties as assigned


• Ability to communicate positively with other staff, residents and families


• Demonstrates empathy, concern and interest in providing quality care and service to residents


• Demonstrates organizational skills and ability to complete assignments in a timely fashion


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team


• Ability to provide resident care in accordance with application legislation, job routines, nursing care plans, ability to read and write English and understand verbal and written instructions in English.

Additional Requirements include

• A negative vulnerable sector check completed within 6 months of start date.


• Completion of a 2 Step TB Skin test within the last 12 months of start date.
