Job summary

Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario is seeking a Peer Support Worker for the Mental Health - PACT team on a temporary full-time basis. The role focuses on mutual support, experiential knowledge sharing, and assisting clients’ recovery within an ACT framework.

Ideal candidates bring lived experience, recovery principles knowledge, and MHRC/OPDI training completion, with strong communication and mentoring skills.

Qualifications

• Personal lived experience of mental illness/addiction as a consumer/survivor.
• Knowledge of recovery principles and peer support concepts.
• Completed Peer Support Training Program (MHRC or equivalent i.e. OPDI) including practicum hours.
• Experience providing peer support preferred (1 year).
• Ability to establish trusting relationships and to mentor peers.

Responsibilities

• Provide mutual support and experiential knowledge sharing to clients and the ACT team.
• Encourage community integration and active involvement in recovery and treatment planning.
• Support clients in coping with symptoms and reducing social stigma.
• Collaborate with nurses, social workers, and other ACT team members.

Rate of Pay: $35.35/hr - $44.17/hr

Responsibilities:

• Peer specialists can provide essential expertise and consultation to the entire team that assists clients with self determination and decision-making.
• Provide mutual support, including the sharing of experiential knowledge and skills and social learning, which plays an invaluable role in clients’ recovery.
• Emotional support and problem solving opportunities
• Encourage and facilitate opportunities for community integration
• Encourage clients to take an active role in their own recovery, treatment decisions, service planning, and goal setting
• Assist clients to recognize and develop coping mechanisms to deal with symptoms of mental illness, and social stigma.
• Advocate for the development of consumer initiatives within the community and identify opportunities for client empowerment.
• Each peer support worker must carry a full caseload as per the ACT guidelines
• Participate in team meetings, case reviews, service planning, clinical discussions, and other ACT team activities.
• Collaborate with nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, addictions and vocational specialists, psychiatrists, and other ACT team members.
• Introduce and refer clients to consumer self-help programs and advocacy organizations that promote recovery and advocacy on behalf of individuals for access to required resources
• Discussions of recovery values and principles with a focus on strengths and wellness
• Support in communicating with others (family, companion, care provider, clinical staff)

Qualifications:

• Personal lived experience of mental illness and/or addiction as a consumer/survivor of the mental health system
• Honours and displays knowledge of recovery principles
• Successful completion of Peer Support Training Program at MHRC or equivalent i.e. OPDI including the completion of 20 to 50 hours of practicum
• Experience providing peer support; a minimum of one year preferred
• Displays excellent business acumen, communication skills & punctuality
• Ability to act as a mentor to mental health consumers, modeling excellent communication skills, coping techniques and self-care
• Ability to establish and maintain trusting relationships with consumers of the mental health system while maintaining appropriate professional relationships and boundaries
• Demonstrates practical knowledge of community resources
• Demonstrate the ability to create a welcoming environment by being approachable, available and non-judgmental
• Demonstrate an ability to work as a member of a team
• Ability to maintain accurate records and possess basic computer skills
• Willingness to learn new skills, to take on additional duties as they arise and are appropriate
• ASIST, safeTALK, WRAP and Mental Health First Aid Training are considered assets
• Access to a reliable car and valid driver’s license
