The Centre for Continuing Education of John Abbott College offers several accredited Nursing training programs, a variety of community health care workshops and CEU courses for registered nurses. The delivery of the Nursing programs takes place in specifically designed spaces in the Nursing department of John Abbott College, including a Simulation centre and in local area hospitals to fulfill the clinical requirements of the training. The more than 200 Nursing students enrolled at the Centre of Continuing Education are lead by a dedicated team of Pedagogical Counsellors (Program Coordinators) and faculty. Pedagogical innovation, the holistic development of the Nursing students and up to date training-on-the job are the driving forces of the Continuing Education Nursing department.
JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of the Centre for Continuing Education and International Programs, the Pedagogical Counsellor is responsible for the students, for coordinating, developing and implementing certain Nursing and Health-related programs and projects, as well as other duties related to the Centre for Continuing Education. This position is intended to address a present surge in new nursing and health programs and to explore anticipated future growth opportunities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a member of the Continuing Education Nursing team, act as a student resource person and coordinate all aspects of the Nursing AEC and DEC Programs offered at the Centre for Continuing Education:
- AEC Programs: Transition to Nursing in Quebec for Internationally Trained Nurses and Refresher Nursing
- DEC Program: Intensive Nursing
Specific tasks include but are not limited to:
- Manage academic training programs and projects assigned, including the development of a critical path
- Offer information sessions for students, coordinate student screening, testing and admission with particular focus on students interested in the AEC for internationally trained nurses
- Act as the student resource person in academic and personal matters
- Provide support and advice to students, including conflict resolution and mediation where required
- Facilitates student access to institutional support services
- Responds to time-sensitive situations involving students, coordinating immediate support and follow up
- Verifies student immunization records, to ensure compliance with clinical placement requirements
- Manages N95 Fit testing for students as part of mandatory clinical safety protocols
- Oversee and organize student clinical placements in hospitals and at the Simulation Centre
- Ensure that relevant College policies and procedures, applicable hospital policies, OIIQ and Ministerial requirements are applied in a consistent manner to programs under her/his responsibility
- Make recommendations and implement program and course updates to ensure that programs meet most recent labor market standards
- Administer evaluations and program revisions and all other activities necessary to the smooth running of the program or course
- Support the development of online/blended learning opportunities, including the potential use of virtual reality
- Implement and/or oversee credited pedagogical activities in the Simulation Centre and ESPA
- Participate in the faculty hiring and the faculty evaluation process, as delegated by the Director
- Onboard new teachers to Continuing Education Nursing Programs
- Manage teacher absences, prepare teacher contracts
- Liaise with outside agencies including, among others: the OIIQ, hospitals and other health care agencies
- Be actively aware of pan-Canadian tendencies in immigrant education for health professionals and participate in seminars, projects, etc. when possible
- Work closely with College staff including the conseillers pédagogiques, other staff of the Centre for Continuing Education, the Chairs of the Nursing Department, the Registrar’s Office, Human Resources
- Participate in various college committees & meetings ( all chairs, tech chairs, special project)
- Participate in provincial committees, consortia and working groups as required
- Make suggestions to the Director of the Centre for Continuing Education for improvements to current programs and for additional offerings and partnerships pertinent to health care professionals
- Supervise technicians, as required
- Ensure that documentation is provided to outside funding sources in a timely manner
- Attend regional and provincial meetings as required
- Perform other relevant tasks, as may be defined by the Director
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Undergraduate degree in an appropriate field of specialization, particularly education
Specific Requirements:
- Member of the OIIQ
- Minimum 5 years experience in the Health Sector
- Bilingual, written and spoken (see Testing below)
Assets:
- Experience in program management in an educational setting
- Excellent leadership, human relations, communications and organisational skills
- Ability to work under time pressure in a fast paced environment
- Strong skills in conflict resolution, advising and mediation
- Profound understanding of the needs of adult Nursing students, in particular of the needs of internationally trained nurses
