Job Description

PAYROLL SERVICES TECHNICIAN

Victoria

18-month Term Certain

The Opportunity

At BC Ferries, payroll is more than processing numbers. It’s about ensuring accuracy, compliance, and trust for thousands of employees who keep our vessels sailing and terminals operating. Every pay period, hundreds of processes come together to ensure our employees are paid accurately and on time. Behind the scenes, our Payroll team plays an important role in keeping those processes running smoothly. We’re looking for a Payroll Services Technician to join the team.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with numbers, systems and detailed information, while also providing responsive service to employees and internal partners. You’ll support a range of payroll activities, from processing manual payroll transactions and maintaining liability records to preparing wage-loss information, supporting Transport Canada licensing requirements and providing reporting and administrative support.

Working in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines, you’ll need to be organized, analytical and comfortable managing competing priorities. Your attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality will be essential as you work with sensitive payroll and employee information.

The Role

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

  • Providing sea time records to employees to support Transport Canada licensing requirements as needed;
  • Calculating wage-loss information for ICBC subrogation;
  • Preparing and distributing manual cheques received from internal and external sources for deposit to payroll receivable accounts;
  • Accessing the WorkSafeBC (WSBC) website to record EFT payments received and providing the Pay Analyst and Accounts Receivable (AR) with accurate and up-to-date payment records;
  • Maintaining and updating spreadsheets tracking payroll liability accounts;
  • Compiling and distributing statistical reports for internal and external stakeholders;
  • Creating and releasing semi-monthly time collection (timesheet) reports for Bargaining Unit (BU) employees for approval by the Team Lead or Assistant Manager, Payroll;
  • Providing relief and backup support to the Payroll unit as needed;
  • Assisting with data entry in Oracle and EZL systems as required;
  • Drafting correspondence and completing forms to support administrative functions;
  • Maintaining documentation control through filing, manual updates and records management processes;
  • Providing reception and switchboard support for the Payroll unit, responding to general inquiries and redirecting calls as appropriate;
  • Processing RBC Express data entries and forwarding transactions to Payroll approvers;
  • Updating TPASS information for retirees in Oracle;
  • Providing orientation, guidance and informal training to staff, offering subject matter expertise, and supporting system testing and implementation; and
  • Performing other related duties as assigned from time to time;
What you bring to the team
  • Completion of relevant post secondary program such as office administration
  • Completion of introductory level accounting courses in a professional designation program preferred
  • Completion of Payroll Compliance and Payroll Fundamentals 1 courses under the National Payroll Association
  • 1 to 2 years experience in a large fast-paced, computerized Payroll department

Deadline: September 27, 2026 at 11:59pm.

The salary for this bargaining unit position is $4,910 per month.
