Role Summary

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Payroll & Benefits Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of full-cycle salary and hourly payroll, and supporting employee benefits programs at NWR. This role is a key contact for complex pay policies and health and wellness benefits, requiring expertise in pay policy administration, benefits management, and employee support. The specialist will also contribute to HR initiatives, compliance meetings, and special projects.

Responsibilities
  1. Manage full-cycle payroll for hourly and salaried staff, ensuring accuracy and compliance with policies and regulations.
  2. Implement payroll changes related to leaves, hires, departures, and deductions.
  3. Prepare reports on payroll activities, address discrepancies, and maintain transparency.
  4. Serve as a primary resource for payroll processes and recommend improvements.
  5. Administer health, dental, and savings plans benefits in line with policies.
  6. Monitor and review benefit plans for compliance and effectiveness.
  7. Coordinate annual benefits renewal and review processes.
  8. Develop and deliver employee information sessions on benefits and wellness programs.
  9. Champion health and wellness initiatives to boost engagement.
  10. Guide staff and leaders on benefits policies and recommend enhancements.
  11. Participate in HR projects, system upgrades, and process improvements.
  12. Lead special HR projects such as compliance meetings and campaigns.
Minimum Requirements
  • This is a full-time, onsite role at NWR’s Sturgeon refinery.
  • Post-secondary education in Finance, Accounting, Payroll, or related field (asset).
  • Payroll designation (asset).
  • 5+ years experience in payroll & benefits processing and administration.
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency with technology systems and process improvement tools.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter with strong ownership and independence.
  • Adherence to safety standards and confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for professional development and learning.
