Job summary

Volker Stevin is seeking a Paver Operator to safely operate paving machines and spread hot mix asphalt across highway and street subgrades. The role is based in Alberta with travel between Lethbridge and Fort McMurray, and the company covers travel and accommodation for travel outside the geographic area.

The candidate will work under the Foreman, perform routine maintenance, manage temperatures, and ensure conformity to project specifications while contributing to a safety-first culture.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3+ years of experience as a paving operator.
• Minimum 5+ years of experience in road construction industry.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a clean abstract (≤6 demerits).
• Knowledge of road construction materials and processes.
• Ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. regularly.

• Preheat the screed and monitor asphalt temperatures.

Job description

Reporting to the Foreman, the Paver Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the asphalt paver. This role involves operating paving machines to spread and level hot mix asphalt on the subgrade of highways and streets. Using stakes and level gauges, the paver operator ensures that the asphalt mix is placed to the specified grade and thickness, meeting project specifications. This role is headquartered in Lethbridge and Ft. McMurray, and involves travel between both operational locations, accepting applicants from across Alberta. The company will provide and cover travel and accommodation costs for work‑related travel outside the designated geographic area.

How You’ll Add Value

• Operate a paver and other heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner
• Perform daily maintenance and safety inspections to ensure the equipment is in optimal working condition
• Preheat the paving screed before asphalt placement and monitor/control asphalt mixture temperatures
• Manually light burners to start the heating units of the paver and regulate screed temperature
• Operate controls to lower the screed auger, manage the hopper, and navigate the paver's direction effectively
• Align the paving machine to receive asphalt from dump trucks and maintain a consistent flow of material into the hopper while safely coordinating with trucks
• Monitor the distribution of paving materials along the screed and adjust its direction to eliminate voids at curbs and joints
• Ensure the proper application of asphalt by accurately smoothing it to the desired height, width, and depth
• Attach and adjust screed extensions to accommodate varying project width
• Train and guide new employees on the safe and efficient operation of the paver and related equipment
• Actively contribute to Volker Stevin Contracting’s safety culture, promoting a safe and productive work environment

What You Bring

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience as a Paving Operator is required
• Minimum of 5+ years of experience within the road construction industry
• Knowledge of road construction materials, road construction processes and industry requirements
• Understanding of computerized controls and electronics
• Ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. regularly
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions
