Qualifications

  • Grade 12, medical terminology, and Nursing Unit Clerk program graduation required.
  • One year of recent related experience or equivalent education and training.

Job description

Patient Services Clerk, Maternal Newborn Unit

BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre

Vancouver, BC

What you'll do
  1. Answer telephone, take and relay messages, calling/paging appropriate personnel for physician's orders and patient diagnosis reports, and send/receive faxed information.
  2. Enter patient information into Cerner system for discharge, transfers to other facilities, and transfers between units.
  3. Make arrangements for procedures inside and outside the facility, such as laboratory tests, CT scans, and ultrasounds, including booking appointments, ambulances, and informing care providers.
  4. Transcribe and process physicians' orders for medications, tests, and treatments for RN approval; notify primary RN of stat orders.
  5. Check all charts for unprocessed physician's orders at shift end, process them, and notify the charge nurse of any issues.
  6. Prepare charts for new admissions, including labels, imprinting sheets, and attaching standing orders.
  7. Maintain patient records, file reports, retrieve previous charts, and dismantle charts on discharge or transfer.
  8. Prepare charts for transfers by photocopying or sending information via fax or computer.
  9. Complete demographic info for Vital Statistics in accordance with hospital policies.
  10. Notify departments like Dietary and Housekeeping of patient requirements for discharge or transfer.
  11. Perform clerical duties such as compiling statistics, preparing reports, maintaining supplies, and coordinating equipment repairs.
  12. Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you bring

Qualifications

  • Grade 12, medical terminology, graduation from an approved Nursing Unit Clerk program, plus one year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
