Job summary

Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Edmonton seeks a Pathologists' Assistant I to perform gross examination, dissection, and documentation of biopsy and surgical specimens under pathologist supervision. You will assist in autopsies, contribute to teaching, and participate in quality-control projects across multiple sites.

A Master's in Pathologists' Assistant or CCCCPA certification is required, with active certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Pathologists' Assistant or equivalent recognized by CCCCPA.
  • Active or eligible for CCCCPA certification.
  • Experience in grossing specimens of all complexities and autopsies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform gross examination, describe and dissect specimens and document findings.

Join the Edmonton Zone Pathologists’ Assistant team! With the primary sites at the Royal Alex Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital and additional sites at the Grey Nuns Hospital, Sturgeon Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute, your opportunity to provide high-quality patient care will cover an exciting variety of duties in Anatomic Pathology. Duties include but are not limited to: grossing and prepping all complexities of specimens, teaching residents, medical students, graduate students, and operational students and staff, performing autopsies, performing frozen sections, and contributing to quality control/improvement projects.As a tertiary care center, and as the major catchment site for many complex surgeries in Western Canada, Edmonton receives a diverse and highly interesting suite of surgical pathology specimens. Our PAs regularly have the chance to learn and expand their knowledge in Anatomic Pathology, participate in PA rounds, and pass on their knowledge with various teaching opportunities.This vacancy may be eligible for the Recruitment Incentive.

Description:

As a Pathologists' Assistant I, you will perform gross examination (describe, dissect and document) specimens from biopsy and surgical procedures, selecting sections for processing. You will work in close collaboration with and under the supervision of pathologist medical staff in all matters relating to tissue examination, dissection, and staff/resident training and evaluation. You will assist Pathologists or Residents in the performance of Hospital-ordered autopsies, including receiving and preparing remains.

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree of Pathologists' Assistant or equivalent combination of education and experience recognized by the Canadian Association of Pathologists for Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistant (CCCPA) certification.Active or eligible for certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Current CCCPA certification in both grossing and autopsy.Recent and relevant experience grossing specimens of all complexities.Recent and relevant experience in adult, pediatric, and perinatal autopsies, with ability to continue participating in all autopsies without personal restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Epic – Beaker, AP Modules.Experience with DMO or other voice recognition dictating software.Experience teaching learners to gross.
