Job Description:

We are seeking a Patent Agent to join our team and work directly with clients to support their diverse IP needs. In this role, you will collaborate with clients to develop and manage their IP strategies, working on technologies and patents across various innovative fields. This role offers the flexibility of remote work within the United States.

Key Responsibilities:

Patent Application Preparation and Prosecution:

• Conduct thorough prior art searches to assess the patentability of client inventions.
• Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), or United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and coordinate with foreign associates for international filings.
• Prepare and respond to office actions and other communications from patent offices.

Client Collaboration and IP Strategy Development:

• Work closely with clients to understand their inventions and business objectives.
• Develop and implement IP strategies that align with clients' business goals and enhance their competitive advantage.
• Advise clients on IP portfolio management, including strategies for maintenance, enforcement, and monetization.

Legal Compliance and Continuous Learning:

• Stay abreast of evolving patent laws, regulations, and best practices to ensure compliance and provide informed guidance to clients.
• Maintain accurate records of all patent-related activities and client communications.

Qualifications:

Licensure:

• Must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, a Class 1 licensee of the College of Patent Agents and Trademark Agents (CPATA), or a registered patent practitioner with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Educational Background:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, life sciences, or a related technical field. An advanced degree (a graduate or doctoral degree) is preferred.

Experience:

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in patent drafting and prosecution, preferably within high-technology sectors such as software, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, electronics, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, manufacturing, and/or mechanical systems.

Technical Expertise:

• Strong technical background in specific areas of innovation (e.g., software, electronics, engineering, life sciences, etc.) is highly desirable.

Communication Skills:

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex IP concepts clearly and effectively to clients and stakeholders.

Preferred Skills:

• Familiarity with IP issues related to emerging technologies, common IP strategies and practices used by companies, and the ability to navigate the evolving IP landscape.
• Familiarity with patent laws, PCT filings and processes, and global prosecution workflows
• Experience in collaborating with research and development teams to identify and document inventions.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
• Excellent communication and technical writing skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in using patent search tools and databases an asset
• Experience working with cross-functional teams or in an in-house IP setting
• Experience working on IP and Patent landscapes, IP scouting, and technology transfer, is an advantage
