Job description

Position Summary

Support Staff Regular Part-time New Position

(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements)

The Part-Time Technologist, Powerline Technician provides assistance to faculty by managing the use of facilities, including developing strategies for demonstrating practical skills based on established learning objectives; demonstrating skills to students and completing remedial instructions for those students who require further assistance in mastering the practical skills. The incumbent will also be responsible for the setup, operation and maintenance of a wide variety of machines and equipment. They will provide technical support in matters of a complex nature, requiring a high degree of independent judgment, technical specialization and experience.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through an in-person work arrangement that is 3-4 days per week, based on lab schedules.

The Part-Time Technologist, Powerline Technician will be scheduled for 24 hours per week, between Monday and Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 10:00 p.m.

Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrates practical skills to students as directed by faculty
  2. Provides remedial instruction to those students who require further assistance in mastering required practical skills, either during scheduled course time or outside of the students’ regular class hours
  3. Demonstrates the safe use of equipment and procedures to students, in accordance with applicable industry best practices, and all applicable safety rules and regulations, both through personal demonstration and when assisting students’ learning
  4. Evaluates equipment and supplies prior to ordering and prepares purchase requisitions for supplies and equipment
  5. Maintains a suitable inventory of all supplies and operating equipment to ensure seamless program delivery
  6. Tracks purchases to facilitate future purchases and budget input
  7. Assists program coordinators with the receipt, acknowledgement and tracking of donations as requested
  8. Sources material needed for new teaching aids and new budget items as directed
  9. Maintains facilities to ensure a safe learning environment, free of hazards, both inside (classrooms and bay) and outside (yard)
  10. Safe set up, operation and maintenance of a wide variety of machines and mobile hydraulic equipment, including the fleet of trucks
  11. Develops safety-related documentation
  12. Prepares, sets up and dismantles practical labs
Qualifications
  1. Powerline Technician (434A) certificate of qualification and certificate of apprenticeship are required
  2. Minimum five years of related industry experience is required
  3. Ability to be flexible and organized
  4. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  5. Problem-analysis and problem-solving skills
  6. Computer literacy skills
  7. Willingness to maintain and upgrade skills and knowledge through courses, seminars, etc.
