Job summary

SOAR Community Services is seeking a part-time Support Counsellor for Cornerstone in Brantford, Ontario. You will support youth in a 23-bed transitional housing residence, helping with counselling and life skills coaching to enable independent living.

Responsibilities include implementing Support Plans, applying Housing First principles, coordinating with the Cornerstone team, and ensuring a safe environment while distributing medications when needed.

Qualifications

• College diploma in a Human/Social Services field.
• Minimum of 2 years’ combined student placement and/or paid experience with youth with substance use, mental health and/or homeless issues.
• Proficient in MS Office and familiar with databases.
• Access to reliable transportation; some travel may be required.
• Able to manage frequent exposure to direct and vicarious traumatic stress.
• Police vulnerable sector check required with consideration of offenses.

Duties

The Opportunity

We are recruiting for a Support Counsellor, Cornerstone. This role is a vital part of our Housing Program, supporting individuals with a 23-bed transitional housing residence for both males and females between the ages of 18-29 years of age. Cornerstone House works with individuals who are precariously housed or at risk of homelessness and provides them with a safe place to stay, help and support with counselling and life skills coaching to support the transition towards independent living.

• Assist with established Support Plans
• Apply the principles of the Housing First approach in day-to-day work and interactions
• Work collaboratively with the Cornerstone team in order to ensure program delivery to all youth clients
• Integrate a harm reduction approach
• Help clients develop the skills and resources they need to enhance their social functioning.
• Tour the facilities to ensure the residence, clients and grounds are safe and secure.
• Monitor, distribute and document medication.
• Maintains a safe and clean facility
