Job summary

City of Vaughan is seeking School Crossing Guards to help children cross safely with shifts that vary by location. This role offers flexible hours starting at 15 hours per week, with two shifts per day at many crosswalks and a September‑to‑June contract.

Qualifications

• Vulnerable sector check required from an accredited police service prior to employment.
• General alertness and keen observation of surroundings; ability to move briskly in and out of intersections.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and handle a STOP sign (about 1 lb) for up to one minute.
• Courteous and pleasant demeanor with the ability to interact effectively with children, pedestrians, school staff and other patrons.
• Good vision and hearing to detect oncoming traffic from a safe distance.
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, wind).

Responsibilities

• Balance traffic flow and pedestrian flow with a focus on children’s safety.
• Exercise sound judgement and determine safe gaps in traffic to allow pedestrians to cross.
• Communicate clearly and effectively to crosswalk users regarding safe crossing practices.
• Oversee the safe conduct of children when approaching, using and leaving the crosswalk area.
• Work every school day in split shifts surrounding school bells (excluding PA days and school holidays).
• Must be punctual and stay for the entire scheduled shift time.
