Job summary

Niagara College invites applications for a Part-Time Nurse in Health, Wellness & Accessibility Services at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus. The starting hourly wage is $41.36/hr for a 24-hour work week, with additional hours at peak times.

Reporting to the Director, Health Services, the Nurse will provide on‑campus health care, conduct health assessments, deliver care and counselling, and coordinate on-campus physician clinics to ensure accessible services for students and staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) is required.
• Certificate of Competence through the Ontario College of Nurses is required.
• BLS/HCP, AED and First Aid certificates are required.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate direct client care: obtain histories, conduct examinations and assessments, provide education and counseling.
• Develop treatment plans with physician follow-up and referrals.
• Administer injections, drugs or treatments per policies and directives.
• Assess client understanding to tailor counseling and teaching.
• Collect specimens for laboratory testing per health department requirements.
• Administer vaccines and Mantoux tests per medical order.
• Organize educational events on health promotion on campus.

Job description

Applications are invited for the regular position of Part-Time Nurse in the Health, Wellness & Accessibility Services/Student Services, located at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus. The starting hourly wage is $41.36/hr for a 24-hour work week. Additional hours may be required at peak times during the year such as start or end of term.

Reporting to the Director, Health Services, the successful candidate the successful candidate will provide quality, on campus health care services to the college community in accordance with legislation requirements, and professional standards. The College Nurse is responsible for conducting detailed physical and mental health assessments, delivering health care services, providing health education and counselling, and administering first aid as required. The successful candidate will also coordinate and support on campus physician clinics, ensuring accessible and effective health services for students and employees.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinate and deliver direct client care by obtaining relevant client histories, conducting physical examinations and assessments, providing client education for common health problems, anticipatory guidance, health maintenance and disease management and by providing medical management or other appropriate treatment as authorized through delegated acts and medical directives and identified in the treatment plan
• Develop treatment plans including evaluation of care, with physician follow-up and referral to outside medical care as necessary
• Administer injections, drugs or treatments based on policies and procedures and medical directives
• Assess clients’ understanding of the issue in order to provide the most effective counselling and teaching strategies
• Collect and process specimens for laboratory testing, including urine, blood, stool, vaginal and urethral secretions, and skin scrapings, in accordance with the requirements stipulated through the health department
• Administer required vaccines, injects and interprets Mantoux tests and provide serology requisitions to check immune status per medical order
• Actively initiate, create, plan, and co-operate in presenting educational events related to health promotion including classroom presentations and awareness events

Qualifications:

• Four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
• Minimum three (3) years' experience as a Registered Nurse in progressive community nursing
• Experience working independently, preferably in an adult educational environment
• Possesses a Certificate of Competence through the Ontario College of Nurses
• Basic Life Saving/Health Care Provider (BLS/HCP), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid Certificate required

This position is open to internal employees. Internal employees are those classified as full-time permanent within the Full-Time Support Staff bargaining unit, regular part-time (RPT) employees who have completed probation, and Appendix D employees with six consecutive months of Appendix D service with the College at the time of posting.
