Job description

Applications are invited for the position of College Nurse in the Health, Wellness & Accessibility Services/Student Services, located at the Welland Campus and the Daniel J. Patterson Campus. The starting hourly rate is $48.07/hr (Pay Band K - $48.07/hr to $55.57/hr) for a 35-hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary.

Reporting to the Director, Health Services, the successful candidate will provide quality, on campus health care services to the college community in accordance with legislation requirements, and professional standards. The College Nurse is responsible for conducting detailed physical and mental health assessments, delivering health care services, providing health education and counselling, and administering first aid as required. The successful candidate will also coordinate and support on campus physician clinics, ensuring accessible and effective health services for students and employees.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinate and deliver direct client care by obtaining relevant client histories, conducting physical examinations and assessments, providing client education for common health problems, anticipatory guidance, health maintenance and disease management and by providing medical management or other appropriate treatment as authorized through delegated acts and medical directives and identified in the treatment plan
• Develop treatment plans including evaluation of care, with physician follow-up and referral to outside medical care as necessary
• Administer injections, drugs or treatments based on policies and procedures and medical directives
• Assess clients’ understanding of the issue in order to provide the most effective counselling and teaching strategies
• Collect and process specimens for laboratory testing, including urine, blood, stool, vaginal and urethral secretions, and skin scrapings, in accordance with the requirements stipulated through the health department
• Administer required vaccines, injects and interprets Mantoux tests and provide serology requisitions to check immune status per medical order
• Actively initiate, create, plan, and co-operate in presenting educational events related to health promotion including classroom presentations and awareness events

Qualifications:

• Four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
• Minimum three (3) years experience as a Registered Nurse in progressive community nursing
• Experience working independently, preferably in an adult educational environment
• Possesses a Certificate of Competence through the Ontario College of Nurses
• Basic Life Saving/Health Care Provider (BLS/HCP), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid Certificate required

This position is open to internal employees. Internal employees are those classified as full-time permanent within the Full-Time Support Staff bargaining unit, regular part-time (RPT) employees who have completed probation, and Appendix D employees with six consecutive months of Appendix D service with the College at the time of posting.
