Job summary

The Town of Whitby is seeking a Part-time Duty Patrol to support the Roads/Traffic team in inspecting municipal highways and reporting hazards. The role focuses on safety, minor repairs, and coordinating with operations to address deficiencies in accordance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards.

Applicants should have carpentry or cement-related training, OGRA Winter Maintenance training, and a valid G license. The position offers flexible hours with weekend shifts and a competitive hourly wage.

Qualifications

• Community college and/or trade school courses in carpentry, cement work or a related discipline.
• Three years directly related work experience with road patrolling and inspections.
• Winter Maintenance Operations training for patrollers through OGRA.
• Training in Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 and WHMIS.
• Current CPR Level A and Emergency First Aid certification.
• Strong skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
• Valid Class G Driver’s Licence and Safe Driver eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Identify and report hazardous road conditions and deficiencies following Minimum Maintenance Standards.
• Secure and repair defects, including minor ploughing or sand/salt dispatching as needed.
• Provide general traffic control for stationary and moving road repair operations.
• Pick up litter and road debris; ensure safe equipment operation.
• Deliver excellent customer service to the public and agencies.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

Reporting to the Supervisor(s) of Operations (Roads/Traffic), and under the direction of the Working Foreperson(s), the Part-time Duty Patrol position is responsible for scheduled inspections of all municipal highways under the Town’s jurisdiction.

As such, the incumbent is responsible for: identifying and accurately reporting all hazardous situations and/or road deficiencies and conditions, in accordance to the Minimum Maintenance Standards (summer and winter); securing and repairing identified deficiencies including minor ploughing and/or sand/salt and/or dispatching to the appropriate operational division for the necessary attention and/or repair; general traffic control for both stationary and rolling road repair operations; picking up litter, garbage and/or road debris; ensuring all equipment and/or tools are operated in a safe and professional manner; providing excellent customer service, including responding to inquiries/concerns from the general public, emergency services, agencies and/or other members of staff in a courteous manner; and, other duties as assigned.

What You Bring To Our Team

• community college and/or trade school courses in carpentry, cement work or a related discipline

• thorough understanding and training in the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 and WHMIS
• current certification in C.P.R. (Level A) and Emergency First Aid
• demonstrated working knowledge (basic to intermediate level) in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) strong technical, analytical, research and problem solving skills to ensure work is completed safely and accurately
• a valid Class G Driver’s Licence maintained in good standing and qualification for the Town’s Safe Driver Program criteria

What We Offer You

Salary Range/Hourly rate: $25.47 - $28.29

Hybrid information: Mobile Frontline Hours: Flex hours, including days, evenings and weekends (maximum of 24 hours per week).
