Job summary

The District of Saanich is seeking a Parks GIS Analyst to join the Parks Division. The role supports the development, maintenance and expansion of parks asset data within the GIS environment, and provides spatial analysis, mapping and reporting for planning, operations and public communication.

Reporting to the Manager, this position is 35 hours/week in an office setting with occasional field verification. ArcGIS Pro experience and knowledge of environmental datasets are preferred.

Parks GIS Analyst

1 Permanent Full-Time (CUPE Local 2011) Position

Parks, Recreation and Community Services is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Parks GIS Analyst to join the Parks Division. Reporting to the Manager of Urban Forestry, Natural Areas, and Community Stewardship, this position supports the ongoing development, maintenance, improvement and expansion of parks, biodiversity, urban forest and related parks asset data within the District’s GIS environment. The successful candidate will provide spatial analysis, mapping, statistics, reports and graphic materials that support planning, operations, stewardship, asset management, policy implementation and public communication.
The Parks GIS Analyst performs a variety of GIS work, including data compilation, conversion, geocoding, geoprocessing, topological editing, cartographic output, report generation, data quality control and user support. The role maintains parks and environmental GIS data related to urban forestry, streams, invasive species, biodiversity features, species at risk, ecosystems, habitat features, environmental covenants and other park assets. The position also supports departmental and corporate priorities such as the Urban Forest Strategy, Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, Tree Protection Bylaw, Streamside Development Permit Area, Climate Plan and Parks asset management program, while assisting with field data collection workflows, documentation, training and continuous improvement of GIS business processes.
Requirements include a degree in Biology, Forestry, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geomatics, Computer Science or a related discipline, along with courses directly related to GIS; three years of related GIS experience, preferably including work with parks, environmental, natural resource and/or asset-related spatial data; and a minimum of three months of field capture experience. The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of GIS principles, methods and standards related to spatial data management, cartography, metadata, data quality control, web mapping, hosted and enterprise data layers, mobile field applications, permissions and environmental or parks-related datasets. Experience with ArcGIS Pro, current Esri web/mobile applications, GIS data quality management, documentation and user support is preferred. Sound knowledge of parks-related environmental subject matter, including urban forestry, biodiversity, natural areas, ecological restoration and park asset information, is also preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
The successful candidate will work 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some evenings and weekends as needed. The position works primarily in an office environment with occasional work outside, and periodic field verification and support for field collection activities may be required.
