Job description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Supervisor – Parking Authority, undertakes maintenance of parking meters, parking structures, parking lots, and parking control equipment, and collects parking meter monies.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repairs and installs parking meter posts and heads.
  • Repairs and maintains parking meter mechanisms.
  • Collects all monies deposited in meters and transports same to specified locations.
  • Cleans and maintains parking structures and lots including flower beds; operates a powered sweeper when necessary.
  • Maintains and repairs gate control equipment, revenue collection equipment, count systems, and all other equipment related to parking facilities; liaises with vendors and refers to equipment manuals to effect repairs.
  • Paints lane marking stripes on parking lots and in garages.
  • Performs routine inspections of parking meter installations and investigates complaints on faulty meters.
  • Appears in court as a witness to give evidence on accuracy of meters.
  • Maintains and replaces lights on parking lots.
  • Removes snow from walkways, steps and lot entrances.
  • Maintains a computerized inventory of parking meter locations and status (e.g. out of service, repaired and available for service.)
  • Downloads and uploads data to and from hand-held devices; inputs data into inventory database; monitors inventory and informs Supervisor of required stock.
  • Erects traffic control signs.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Secondary school graduation; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of electricity and electronics

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be mechanically inclined
  • Proficient in the use of a welding unit and cutting torch
  • Must be capable of operating power tools and equipment
  • Must be capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to read and write and to comprehend written/oral information and instructions
  • Ability to operate a computer
  • Must be physically capable of performing the essential duties of the job class including, but not limited to lifting, pushing, pulling, and standing, walking, squatting, kneeling and stooping on an ongoing basis.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Must have a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it applies to this work

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must successfully complete basic welding safety and use training and the use of cutting torches within 6 months of start date
  • Must successfully complete vendor training on parking meter equipment, applicable software use and multi-space parking lot equipment and parkade operating equipment within 12 months of start date
  • Must obtain a propane cylinder exchange certification within 12 months of start date
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
  • Must be bondable and willing to work shift work
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
