Job summary

The City of Thunder Bay is hiring a Transit Service Mechanic responsible for servicing buses and equipment. This position involves cleaning, maintenance, and repairs along with record-keeping and responding to service calls. Ideal candidates should possess a Grade 12 education and relevant mechanical skills.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent experience in servicing buses.
  • Must possess a valid Class 'D' Ontario Drivers License, or equivalent with a Z endorsement.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor and the technical direction of the Leadhand Service Technician A, services Transit buses and equipment and completes inspection reports.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs major and minor interior and exterior cleaning of vehicles.
  • Performs interior repairs, seat repairs, and upholstering on vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs servicing of vehicles/equipment, including greasing, changing oil, inspecting, wheel torqueing and cleaning, sandblasting, fueling, probing, and dumping fare boxes,
  • Responds to service calls relating to bus service issues as required.
  • Performs bus shelter cleaning and set up of temporary bus stops.
  • Maintains records of servicing and cleaning.
  • Performs general work area cleaning, including cleaning offices, washrooms, shop, and storage areas as required.
  • Answers telephone calls and relays messages.
  • Lines up buses in order of priority for cleaning, availability and deficiencies.
  • Shuttles vehicles/equipment as required for change-offs, parking, servicing, etc.
  • Completes required documentation and records and provides accurate data regarding all servicing repairs and conditions found.
  • Performs snow removal on-site as directed.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Grade 12 graduation; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in the servicing/operation of buses and equipment

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must have a mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions
  • Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class "D" Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent with a Z endorsement
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Must be competent within the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Must have the ability to operate a computer

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
